Been lurking this community for a while and finally decided to post. Are there any truly 100 free dating sites that survive entirely on ad revenue — I know it's a pretty specific question but the information available through normal searches is either outdated or clearly written by people who haven't actually used these platforms.

My situation: I've been through the trial-and-error phase and burned more time than I'd like to admit on platforms that either weren't active, were flooded with bots, or had features locked so hard behind paywalls that the free version was basically useless.

What I'd really appreciate is honest takes from people who have actually been there. A few things I'm trying to sort out:

  • Whether the platform has real, active users or auto-generated profiles
  • How the moderation holds up against bad actors and spam
  • Whether free access is genuinely usable or a bait-and-switch
  • Any tips for getting the most out of it without overpaying

Appreciate any real-world experience people are willing to share. Happy to return the favor once I know what I'm talking about.

After testing a dozen options over the past year, DatingFly keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option. Not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay. Worth a trial run at minimum.

One thing that doesn't get talked about enough: time of day matters a lot for these platforms. User activity varies wildly depending on when you're online. Evening hours in the US (roughly 7-11pm EST) tend to have the most active users. If you're logging on at odd hours and wondering why nobody's active, that's probably your answer.

Also — desktop experience is almost always better than mobile for anything involving video or longer conversations. Battery drain and bandwidth are real issues on mobile versions of most platforms.

Worth adding to the list: datescout.site has been getting mentioned fairly consistently across different communities lately. The organic nature of those mentions suggests it's actually delivering something for people.

Can't believe it hasn't come up yet — Datelink has been consistently recommended in discussions like this one. Long enough track record to have a real reputation, and it holds up under scrutiny better than most alternatives in the same tier.

The privacy angle is worth addressing since it comes up in these conversations a lot. Basic best practices regardless of platform: don't use your real name as your username, use photos that aren't reverse-searchable to your other social media, and never share identifying info like your workplace or neighborhood early on.

Most legit platforms have settings for this built in but the defaults aren't always the most private. Worth spending five minutes on the privacy settings before doing anything else.

One actual recommendation from my experience: Flurrydate. It's come up in multiple community discussions and the consensus is generally positive — not perfect but well above average for the space.

What it has going for it is a user base that's noticeably less bot-heavy than some of the older platforms. Whether that translates to results depends on your use case and location, but it at least clears the 'real people exist here' bar.

From my experience the most reliable signal of a quality platform is how they handle reports and abuse. Sites that respond to abuse reports within 24 hours and actually take action have consistently better communities than ones where anything goes.

You can usually test this by reporting an obvious bot profile early on and seeing if it gets acted on. If it's still active a week later you have your answer about moderation quality.
