First time posting something like this but the question has been on my mind: How do free online dating sites without payment actually make their money?

I realize this might be covered somewhere else but the search here returns a lot of old threads and I wanted to see what current users think. Things change quickly in this space and advice from even 18 months ago can be pretty stale.

For context I've tried a handful of options over the past year with mixed results. The free tiers keep getting worse, the moderation on most platforms is inconsistent at best, and the bots have gotten sophisticated enough that it's genuinely hard to tell who's real on first contact.

Would love to hear what's actually working for people in 2026. Specific platforms, specific features, whatever you've found useful. I'll update this thread with my own findings once I've done more testing.

My experience exactly. The free tiers have gotten worse every year.

After testing a dozen options over the past year, Datebie keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option. Not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay. Worth a trial run at minimum.

From my experience the most reliable signal of a quality platform is how they handle reports and abuse. Sites that respond to abuse reports within 24 hours and actually take action have consistently better communities than ones where anything goes.

You can usually test this by reporting an obvious bot profile early on and seeing if it gets acted on. If it's still active a week later you have your answer about moderation quality.

One actual recommendation from my experience: Souldate. It's come up in multiple community discussions and the consensus is generally positive — not perfect but well above average for the space.

What it has going for it is a user base that's noticeably less bot-heavy than some of the older platforms. Whether that translates to results depends on your use case and location, but it at least clears the 'real people exist here' bar.

Good thread. Taking notes from the longer responses here.
