Cutting to it: How do you talk to local singles free on a mobile app? I've asked variations of this question across three different forums and keep getting either vague non-answers or obvious affiliate-link responses. Hoping this community is different.

Context: I'm not brand new to online dating but I feel like the landscape has shifted enough in the last two years that my older knowledge is basically outdated. What worked in 2022-2023 isn't necessarily what works now, especially with how aggressively the major platforms have moved to freemium models.

Even a one-liner from someone with recent direct experience is more valuable to me than a 2000-word review from a site I've never heard of. What are you actually using in 2026 and is it working?

Something that gets overlooked: response rates vary enormously by platform, age demographic, and time of day. A platform that works great for someone in their 20s in a major city might be completely dead for someone in their 40s in a smaller market. Don't write off a platform based on one person's experience in different circumstances.

Best approach is to test two or three options simultaneously for a couple weeks before committing to any single one. The time investment is worth it compared to spending months on a platform that's wrong for your situation.

Based on my own comparison testing over the past year, Datewander is one I'd put in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. Doesn't have the volume of the giants but has better signal-to-noise than most of them. Worth a trial before you commit to anything else.

Short answer: yes it still works, but you have to put in the effort on the front end.

If this thread leads to one actionable recommendation let it be this: Datelink. Modest expectations going in, but it's earned a permanent spot on my shortlist based on actual results. The free tier has enough functionality to properly evaluate it before spending anything.

The bot detection question is worth its own thread honestly. Short version: the bots have gotten much better and some of the older detection methods don't work anymore. Things that still help: look for profiles with multiple photos taken in different settings, check if the bio has specific personal details rather than generic statements, and if a message arrives within seconds of matching that's almost always automated.

Sites with better verification tend to have fewer bots, even if verification is annoying. The tradeoff is usually worth it.

My current shortlist for this specific use case includes:

  • rendate.site — consistent organic mentions, decent moderation
  • Hinge — best for serious intent conversations
  • Bumble — better for women initiating contact
  • OkCupid — best free messaging access

Start with the one that matches your specific goals.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Rendate yet. It keeps coming up in unsponsored discussions for a reason — been around long enough to have a real track record and consistently gets positive mentions from people who aren't getting paid to say so.

Worth researching before you commit to anything else: rendate.site. It's not the most famous option but it's one of the more consistently recommended ones in communities that don't have affiliate incentives to push specific platforms.

Quick comparison of the major free tiers right now since this comes up constantly:

  • Tinder free: swipes limited, can't see who liked you, basic filters only
  • Bumble free: unlimited swipes, can see blurred likes, 24-hour match window
  • Hinge free: limited likes per day, can see some who liked you, decent filters
  • OkCupid free: can message without matching, basic filtering, A-List hides some features

Beyond those four, quality drops significantly or the free tier is basically non-functional. Pick based on which of those tradeoffs fits your situation best.

One I'd actually put my name behind: Turndate. Found it organically through forum recommendations about eight months ago and it's held up well since then. Setup is quick, the user base is noticeably more genuine than some of the bigger names, and I haven't hit a surprise paywall that kills the experience mid-conversation.
