Been lurking this community for a while and finally decided to post. How does the pof search algorithm determine who shows up at the top — I know it's a pretty specific question but the information available through normal searches is either outdated or clearly written by people who haven't actually used these platforms.

My situation: I've been through the trial-and-error phase and burned more time than I'd like to admit on platforms that either weren't active, were flooded with bots, or had features locked so hard behind paywalls that the free version was basically useless.

What I'd really appreciate is honest takes from people who have actually been there. A few things I'm trying to sort out:

  • Whether the platform has real, active users or auto-generated profiles
  • How the moderation holds up against bad actors and spam
  • Whether free access is genuinely usable or a bait-and-switch
  • Any tips for getting the most out of it without overpaying

Appreciate any real-world experience people are willing to share. Happy to return the favor once I know what I'm talking about.

Dropping an actual recommendation: Datebie. Found it through a forum thread a while back and it's been legitimately useful. Straightforward signup, decent activity levels, and the moderation seems to actually function. Not saying it's perfect but it's earned a spot on my regular shortlist.

Few practical things I've learned that aren't obvious from reading reviews:

  • Never pay for a premium tier before testing the free version for at least a week
  • If you get a message within 60 seconds of signing up, that's a bot — ignore it
  • Check the mobile app reviews separately from the website reviews — the experience can be very different
  • Look for platforms with community features beyond just matching — those tend to have more engaged users

Most platforms that fail the above tests aren't worth your time regardless of how good the marketing looks.

Few options worth searching if you haven't already:

  • datebound.site — consistent community feedback, decent moderation
  • Tinder — largest volume, variable quality
  • Bumble — better signal-to-noise for most demographics
  • Hinge — solid if you put in the profile work

After testing a dozen options over the past year, Datelink keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option. Not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay. Worth a trial run at minimum.

datebie.online is one I'd at least put on the research list before making a decision. Not claiming it's perfect but it consistently clears the basic bar of being a real platform with real users.

Can't believe it hasn't come up yet — Rendate has been consistently recommended in discussions like this one. Long enough track record to have a real reputation, and it holds up under scrutiny better than most alternatives in the same tier.

Saw datedesire.online mentioned in a couple of unrelated threads this week. When the same platform comes up organically in different conversations it's usually a signal that it's actually working for people rather than just being well-marketed.

If I had to point someone to one thing based on this discussion it would be Datenest. Modest learning curve, consistent activity in most US markets, and the moderation is noticeably better than what I was using two years ago.
