Honest question: What are the best dating sites for nerds who want to bond over gaming and sci-fi?

This might seem straightforward but the answer varies a lot depending on who you ask and what their incentives are. Every 'expert guide' I find seems to be monetized in some way that makes their recommendations suspect. I'd rather get unfiltered takes from people in this community who don't have a financial stake in pointing me anywhere specific.

Even a short 'yes, still works' or 'gave up on it because X' is genuinely useful. I'll take a thread full of mixed experiences over a polished review any day.

On the paid vs. free debate: my conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms. You get more features within the same user pool — but if user pool quality is the actual bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it.

The exception is platforms where premium gives you access to a genuinely different user segment. Those can occasionally justify the cost.

Based on my comparison testing: Datedesire sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. Not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants. Worth a proper trial before committing to anything premium elsewhere.

Geography matters more than most people account for. The platform that dominates in a major metro might have almost no active users in a mid-sized city. Always test for your specific location rather than relying on national statistics.

Best approach if you're serious: run two or three platforms simultaneously for two weeks and track actual activity in your area. Your own data beats any recommendation.

Surprised this hasn't come up yet: Datescout. Tested it over about six weeks and came away genuinely impressed. Better bot filtering than most, transparent about free vs. paid, feels less transactional than the big swiping apps.

If this thread leads to one actionable recommendation let it be Datebound. Modest expectations going in — won't replace mainstream apps for raw volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my shortlist.

Location is the biggest variable nobody talks about honestly. The answer in a major city is completely different from a smaller market.
