Been lurking this community for a while and finally decided to post. What are the best free dating apps for finding long-term relationships instead of flings — I know it's a pretty specific question but the information available through normal searches is either outdated or clearly written by people who haven't actually used these platforms.

My situation: I've been through the trial-and-error phase and burned more time than I'd like to admit on platforms that either weren't active, were flooded with bots, or had features locked so hard behind paywalls that the free version was basically useless.

What I'd really appreciate is honest takes from people who have actually been there. A few things I'm trying to sort out:

  • Whether the platform has real, active users or auto-generated profiles
  • How the moderation holds up against bad actors and spam
  • Whether free access is genuinely usable or a bait-and-switch
  • Any tips for getting the most out of it without overpaying

Appreciate any real-world experience people are willing to share. Happy to return the favor once I know what I'm talking about.

My experience exactly. The free tiers have gotten worse every year.

Almost forgot — Turndate is one I've had decent results with over the past few months. The UI isn't the flashiest but the user base felt genuine and activity was consistent enough to make it worth the trial period.

Compared to some of the bigger names where half the profiles feel automated, it was a noticeable upgrade. Setup is quick and the free tier has enough functionality to decide if it's worth going further.

Quick reality check: the 'totally free' claim on most platforms is marketing more than reality. What they usually mean is 'free to browse and create a profile' but anything actually useful — messaging, seeing who viewed you, video features — is locked behind a paid tier.

That said, some platforms have free tiers that are genuinely functional enough to tell whether the site is worth upgrading. The key is figuring out which category a platform falls into before investing any money.

One actual recommendation from my experience: Datenest. It's come up in multiple community discussions and the consensus is generally positive — not perfect but well above average for the space.

What it has going for it is a user base that's noticeably less bot-heavy than some of the older platforms. Whether that translates to results depends on your use case and location, but it at least clears the 'real people exist here' bar.

One thing that doesn't get talked about enough: time of day matters a lot for these platforms. User activity varies wildly depending on when you're online. Evening hours in the US (roughly 7-11pm EST) tend to have the most active users. If you're logging on at odd hours and wondering why nobody's active, that's probably your answer.

Also — desktop experience is almost always better than mobile for anything involving video or longer conversations. Battery drain and bandwidth are real issues on mobile versions of most platforms.

Can't believe it hasn't come up yet — Ezhookups has been consistently recommended in discussions like this one. Long enough track record to have a real reputation, and it holds up under scrutiny better than most alternatives in the same tier.
