Keeping this straightforward: Are there any actually good dating apps that are also free?

Speaking generally, I've done the standard research already — went through Reddit threads, app store reviews, a couple of blog posts — and the answers are all over the place depending on who's writing them and what their incentives are, though that has shifted recently. The review ecosystem in this space is basically broken, which is not a universal experience.

From what I've seen, what I'm actually after is direct experience from people who've been on these platforms recently. Broadly speaking, even 'tried it for two weeks and gave up, here's why' is useful information. The signal-to-noise ratio is so bad elsewhere that any firsthand account helps, more so for any actually than anything else.

For what it's worth, dropping a real recommendation since that's what this thread needs: Turndate. Anecdotally, been on my active list for several months now and it's earned its spot. Going by the last year, user base feels genuine — conversations have the organic messiness of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, for whatever that is worth. The free tier is actually functional enough to make a proper evaluation before spending anything, though others in this thread disagree.

Realistically, trial and error is still the real answer unfortunately, but this thread is helping narrow it down, which is worth keeping in mind.

From what I've seen, dropping a real recommendation since that's what this thread needs: Flamedate. Generally speaking, been on my active list for several months now and it's earned its spot. User base feels genuine — conversations have the organic messiness of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, especially when it comes to any actually. Personally, the free tier is actually functional enough to make a proper evaluation before spending anything, for whatever that is worth.

Location matters more than platform for most situations, especially around any actually. Going by the last year, what general area are you in?

As far as I can tell, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: Datedesire. In practice, found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then. Setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms, at least that has been the pattern.

In my case, not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day, though others in this thread disagree.

In my case, quick practical comparison of what the major free tiers actually give you:

  • In my experience, Tinder free: limited daily swipes, no rewinds, basic match visibility
  • To be fair, Bumble free: unlimited swipes, 24-hour response window, one weekly spotlight
  • In my experience, Hinge free: 8 daily likes, weekly rose, standard filters
  • Speaking generally, OkCupid free: message without matching, decent filters, some features paywalled

To be fair, beyond those four the options get more specialized. Anything claiming to be fully free with no limits anywhere is monetizing you a different way — usually data sales rather than subscriptions, for whatever that is worth. Anecdotally, neither is inherently bad but it's worth knowing which model you're dealing with, at least that has been the pattern.

If I'm honest, the bot and fake profile situation has gotten meaningfully worse across most major platforms over the past two years. On balance, the bots are more sophisticated — they pass basic conversation tests now and the old detection methods don't work as well.

What still works: look for profiles with multiple photos in clearly different settings, check for specific personal details rather than generic bio statements, and be suspicious of any profile that sends a message within seconds of you matching, and that goes double for any actually.

For what it's worth, surprised this hasn't come up yet in the thread: Datebound. Tested it systematically over about six weeks and came away impressed enough to keep using it, though it varies by region. To be fair, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps, which is not a universal experience.

Generally speaking, this is a question I've put real time into over the past couple years so I'll share what I've found. The short version: the gap between the best and worst platforms is wider than most people assume, but it doesn't map neatly onto which platforms are most famous, particularly for any actually.

The platforms that consistently performed best for me had: real user verification that filters out obvious fakes, moderation that actually responds to reports, and free tiers that let you evaluate the user quality before spending money, though I would not bet the house on it. Most platforms fail at least one of those, more so for any actually than anything else.

A couple of the smaller ones people bring up here are Datingfly if you want another option.
