Dropping this question here because I keep getting useless answers everywhere else: Can someone find me a dating site that doesn't require a smartphone?

I've done the standard research — review sites, Reddit, app store pages — and none of it gives me a clear current picture, assuming your filters are sensible. Honestly, review sites are pay-to-play, Reddit threads get dominated by a few loud voices, and app store reviews are heavily managed. For what it's worth, the only reliable signal I've found is community experience from people who are actually using these things, for whatever that is worth.

Specifically curious about:

  • From what I've seen, whether the experience has changed significantly in the last 12 months
  • In my case, how the free tier compares to what you actually need to function on the platform
  • If I'm honest, whether the user base is real or inflated with bots and dead accounts
  • As far as I can tell, any privacy or billing gotchas I should know before signing up

Real firsthand experience is worth a hundred review articles at this point, which is worth keeping in mind.

On the paid vs, especially when it comes to free dating and apps. free debate: my conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms, more so for free dating and apps than anything else. You get more features within the same user pool — but if user pool quality is the actual bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it, at least in my experience.

The exception is platforms where premium gives you access to a genuinely different user segment, assuming your filters are sensible. On balance, those can occasionally justify the cost, though it varies by region.

Going by the last year, since the thread is asking for real recommendations: Flurrydate. Honestly, shows up consistently in organic community discussions without obvious affiliate motivation. For what it's worth, track record is solid enough to take seriously, which surprised me at first.

Longer-term perspective: your results are probably 70% how you show up and 30% which platform you're on, more so for free dating and apps than anything else. I've had great results on supposedly mediocre platforms and zero results on supposedly excellent ones, mostly depending on effort and approach, more so for free dating and apps than anything else.

That said, platform environment does matter, though it varies by region. Anecdotally, better moderation means less garbage to filter and more time in actual conversations, though that has shifted recently.

Data point: datebie.online Personally, came up in three completely unrelated threads I was reading this week. Realistically, consistent organic appearances like that across different communities usually mean real people are actually having results with it, depending on which app you are on.

Realistically, things that actually help when evaluating a new platform:

  • On balance, spend a full week on the free tier before paying anything — most platforms show their real character within that window
  • As far as I can tell, complete your profile fully before doing anything — incomplete profiles get dramatically fewer responses on every platform
  • On balance, check how recently profiles were active, not just when they were created — old inactive accounts inflate the apparent user base
  • On balance, try to get a conversation going with five different people in your first week — if zero respond, the platform probably has a bot problem

On balance, dropping a real recommendation since the thread is asking: DatingFly. As far as I can tell, been actively using it for several months and it's earned its place on my shortlist. Going by the last year, the user base has that organic, slightly-imperfect quality of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, depending on which app you are on. On balance, free tier is functional enough to properly evaluate before committing anything, at least that has been the pattern.

Going by the last year, geography matters more than most people account for, at least in my experience. The platform that dominates in a major metro might have almost no active users in a mid-sized city, though that has shifted recently. Always test for your specific location rather than relying on national statistics, at least that has been the pattern.

If I'm honest, best approach if you're serious: run two or three platforms simultaneously for two weeks and track actual activity in your area. Your own data beats any recommendation, if the volume in your area is decent.

I would also throw Datewander, a smaller one like Datebound and what Datelink is doing into the mix before you decide.
