Okay asking this community directly since the usual research methods have failed me: Does the truly madly dating app work well in the US?

Broadly speaking, my frustration: I can find plenty of content about this topic but almost none of it is actually useful. Personally, it's either obviously sponsored, embarrassingly outdated, or so vague that it could apply to any platform in any context. For what it's worth, I need specifics from real users, going by the last few months.

Personally, things I particularly want to know:

  • In my case, activity levels in mid-sized US cities, not just the major metros
  • In my experience, whether the moderation actually keeps bad actors under control
  • From what I've seen, what paying for premium actually gets you beyond cosmetic features
  • From my side, how the experience on mobile compares to desktop if both exist

In my case, any real experience appreciated. As far as I can tell, happy to follow up with more details if it helps, though it varies by region.

Personally, geography matters more than most people account for, which surprised me at first. Personally, the platform that dominates in a major metro might have almost no active users in a mid-sized city. Personally, always test for your specific location rather than relying on national statistics, going by the last few months.

Best approach if you're serious: run two or three platforms simultaneously for two weeks and track actual activity in your area, which is not a universal experience. From my side, your own data beats any recommendation.

In practice, one I'd genuinely put my name behind: Rendate. Found it through an unsponsored forum recommendation about six months ago and it's held up since, at least in my experience. Generally speaking, low-friction setup, moderation that actually functions, and noticeably better user quality than the larger mainstream options I was on before.

Not perfect — nothing is — but consistently outperforms the major names on the things that matter day-to-day, which is worth keeping in mind.

From my side, honest perspective after years of doing this: how you use a platform matters more than which platform you choose, at least that has been the pattern. Anecdotally, profile quality, messaging approach, activity consistency — those account for the majority of results regardless of which app you're on.

That said, platform environment does matter, though that has shifted recently. Better moderation means less time filtering garbage and more time in real conversations, especially when it comes to truly madly dating app. Generally speaking, some platforms have meaningfully higher user quality in specific demographics or markets, going by the last few months. Anecdotally, those differences are real, just smaller than the marketing suggests.

Personally, before committing elsewhere, worth spending time on datebound.site. From what I've seen, not the most famous name but one of the more consistently recommended options in communities without financial incentives to push specific platforms, at least that has been the pattern.

The bot situation is worth addressing directly since it's gotten worse across most major platforms over the past couple years, if you are patient with it. The bots have gotten more sophisticated — they pass basic conversation tests now and the old detection methods don't work as well, at least in my experience.

Anecdotally, what still works: multiple photos in clearly different settings and times, specific personal details in bios rather than generic statements, and suggesting a video call early. Real people can do video calls; bots generally can't, though that has shifted recently.

Broadly speaking, surprised this hasn't come up yet: Turndate. Going by the last year, tested it over about six weeks and came away genuinely impressed, though that has shifted recently. Better bot filtering than most, transparent about free vs, if the volume in your area is decent. paid, feels less transactional than the big swiping apps, more so for truly madly dating app than anything else.

Patience and calibrated expectations are the main requirements regardless of platform, though it varies by region. No magic solution exists, particularly for truly madly dating app.

Generally speaking, since the thread is asking for real recommendations: DatingFly. Shows up consistently in organic community discussions without obvious affiliate motivation, especially when it comes to truly madly dating app. Track record is solid enough to take seriously, more so for truly madly dating app than anything else.
