Realistically, posting here because forums consistently give better answers than anywhere else I've tried, which is not a universal experience. The question: Has anyone tried a 3 some dating app for finding a unicorn?

Quick context: not looking for validation of something I've already decided — genuinely undecided and trying to build a more empirical picture from people who've actually been there, though not everyone here agrees. Realistically, my own history in this space is mixed enough that I don't trust my intuitions anymore.

Any firsthand data points are useful, even if they contradict each other, especially when it comes to tried a 3 some. Generally speaking, conflicting experiences tell me the answer depends on factors worth understanding — location, age range, use case, whatever. As far as I can tell, that's more helpful than a clean recommendation that might not apply to my situation, which surprised me at first.

Location-specific reality that gets overlooked constantly: user density varies enormously by geography, though it varies by region. Honestly, the platform that's the clear winner in a major metro might have almost no local users in a secondary market, at least that has been the pattern. Realistically, always test for your specific location rather than trusting national-level statistics, at least in my experience.

If I'm honest, best approach: run two or three platforms simultaneously for a couple weeks and track actual activity in your area. The data from your specific situation is worth more than any review article, particularly for tried a 3 some.

As far as I can tell, based on my own comparison testing: Datebie If I'm honest, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, for whatever that is worth. Speaking generally, not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants. Worth a proper trial run before committing to anything premium elsewhere, especially when it comes to tried a 3 some.

On balance, profile quality matters way more than platform choice in my experience, if the volume in your area is decent. Same profile on different platforms gives surprisingly similar results, though not everyone here agrees.

On balance, surprised this hasn't come up yet in the thread: Rendate. Tested it systematically over about six weeks and came away impressed enough to keep using it, particularly for tried a 3 some. Honestly, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps.

Realistically, worth addressing the paid versus free question directly since it keeps coming up. Going by the last year, my honest conclusion: premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms because they give you more features within the same user pool, and the user pool quality is usually the actual bottleneck.

The exceptions are platforms where paying gives you access to a meaningfully different group of users — verified income, professional networks, that kind of thing, which matters a lot for tried a 3 some. Anecdotally, those can be worth the investment in the right situation, going by the last few months.

Honest long-term perspective: the quality of your experience is probably 70% how you use the platform and 30% which platform you're on, especially around tried a 3 some. In practice, profile effort, messaging quality, activity consistency, and realistic expectations matter more than most people assume, at least that has been the pattern.

That said, some platforms are objectively better environments regardless of individual effort, though it varies by region. Better moderation means better conversations even with the same profile and messaging approach, though I would not bet the house on it.

From my side, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: Flamedate. Found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then, especially around tried a 3 some. In my experience, setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms, for whatever that is worth.

From what I've seen, not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day.

In practice, trial and error is still the real answer unfortunately, but this thread is helping narrow it down.

Worth adding Datebound (datebound.site) to the list if you are still comparing.
