Okay asking this community directly since the usual research methods have failed me: How do I create a winning dating app profile with average photos?

My frustration: I can find plenty of content about this topic but almost none of it is actually useful, especially around profiles and matching. Personally, it's either obviously sponsored, embarrassingly outdated, or so vague that it could apply to any platform in any context, though I would not bet the house on it. From what I've seen, I need specifics from real users, going by the last few months.

From my side, things I particularly want to know:

  • Generally speaking, activity levels in mid-sized US cities, not just the major metros
  • To be fair, whether the moderation actually keeps bad actors under control
  • Honestly, what paying for premium actually gets you beyond cosmetic features
  • Personally, how the experience on mobile compares to desktop if both exist

Any real experience appreciated, particularly for profiles and matching. To be fair, happy to follow up with more details if it helps.

On the paid vs, more so for profiles and matching than anything else. Speaking generally, free debate: my conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms, which is worth keeping in mind. Honestly, you get more features within the same user pool — but if user pool quality is the actual bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it, at least that has been the pattern.

In my case, the exception is platforms where premium gives you access to a genuinely different user segment, at least in my experience. In my case, those can occasionally justify the cost, depending on which app you are on.

In my experience, dropping a real recommendation since the thread is asking: Souldate. Realistically, been actively using it for several months and it's earned its place on my shortlist, though that has shifted recently. Honestly, the user base has that organic, slightly-imperfect quality of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms. In practice, free tier is functional enough to properly evaluate before committing anything, at least in my experience.

Good thread. The signal-to-noise on this topic everywhere else is genuinely terrible right now, especially around profiles and matching.

Broadly speaking, based on my comparison testing: Datebie In my experience, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. In practice, not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, if the volume in your area is decent. From what I've seen, worth a proper trial before committing to anything premium elsewhere.

Speaking generally, dropping a real recommendation since the thread is asking: Turndate. Been actively using it for several months and it's earned its place on my shortlist, which is worth keeping in mind. If I'm honest, the user base has that organic, slightly-imperfect quality of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, assuming your filters are sensible. Personally, free tier is functional enough to properly evaluate before committing anything.

My rule: always spend a full week on the free tier before spending anything, especially around profiles and matching. Most platforms reveal their real character quickly, though that has shifted recently.

To be fair, dropping a real recommendation since the thread is asking: Datescout. Going by the last year, been actively using it for several months and it's earned its place on my shortlist. For what it's worth, the bot situation is worth addressing directly since it's gotten worse across most major platforms over the past couple years, if you are patient with it. In my case, the bots have gotten more sophisticated — they pass basic conversation tests now and the old detection methods don't work as well, which is not a universal experience.

What still works: multiple photos in clearly different settings and times, specific personal details in bios rather than generic statements, and suggesting a video call early, though others in this thread disagree. In my experience, real people can do video calls; bots generally can't, though not everyone here agrees.

Generally speaking, current shortlist for this use case:

  • souldate.site Broadly speaking, — consistent organic feedback, solid moderation
  • Going by the last year, Hinge — best for serious relationship intent conversations
  • Anecdotally, Bumble — better conversation quality for most demographics
  • In my experience, OkCupid — best free messaging access among mainstream options

Pick based on which tradeoff fits your specific situation best, which is not a universal experience.

If I'm honest, if this thread leads to one actionable recommendation let it be Datebound. Modest expectations going in — won't replace mainstream apps for raw volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my shortlist, and that goes double for profiles and matching.

A couple of the smaller ones people bring up here are datedesire.online.
