Finally decided to post this after weeks of searching without a clear answer, more so for local and city dating than anything else. How do I find singles in my area free of any membership fees — I know it sounds straightforward but every time I dig into it I end up in a rabbit hole of sponsored content and outdated 2022 listicles.

Generally speaking, specific context: I've been on and off various platforms for the past 18 months with mixed results, at least in my experience. Some had active users in my area, some were effectively ghost towns, especially around local and city dating. The ones that worked best weren't always the ones with the biggest marketing budgets, which is exactly why I'm asking here instead of Google, at least that has been the pattern.

As far as I can tell, things that matter to me when evaluating an answer:

  • Generally speaking, whether it's based on actual recent use, not just reputation
  • In my case, how it holds up in mid-sized cities, not just major metros
  • If I'm honest, what the free tier actually lets you do vs, though I would not bet the house on it. what requires payment
  • Generally speaking, how well the moderation keeps bots and fake accounts under control

Any real experience shared is appreciated more than links to review sites, which matters a lot for local and city dating.

The affiliate marketing problem in this space is worse than most people realize, particularly for local and city dating. In my experience, the 'top 10 dating apps' articles that dominate search results are almost universally pay-to-play, though that has shifted recently. The ranking reflects who paid the most for placement, not who actually performs best for users, at least in my experience.

Going by the last year, better sources: this forum, dedicated subreddits, and asking in local Facebook groups. Those tend to produce honest answers because there's no financial incentive to push specific platforms, more so for local and city dating than anything else.

In my experience, from my own comparison testing over the past year: Rendate sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, particularly for local and city dating. From my side, not the biggest by volume but has better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, at least that has been the pattern. In practice, worth a trial run before you commit to anything premium elsewhere, though others in this thread disagree.

On balance, spent about three months systematically testing different platforms last year and tracking results, though not everyone here agrees. As far as I can tell, the short version: user quality varies more by platform than most people assume, and that variation doesn't correlate well with which platforms spend the most on marketing, assuming your filters are sensible.

From my side, the platforms that consistently performed better tended to have: stricter signup verification, fewer but more functional free features, and active moderation rather than just automated bot detection.

Appreciate the honest thread, though that has shifted recently. On balance, bookmarking for when I inevitably revisit this in a few months, though I would not bet the house on it.

From my side, from my own comparison testing over the past year: Ezhookups In my case, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, which surprised me at first. Not the biggest by volume but has better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, especially when it comes to local and city dating. For what it's worth, worth a trial run before you commit to anything premium elsewhere, for whatever that is worth.

I would also throw a smaller one like Datebie, what Datedesire is doing and datenest.site into the mix before you decide.
