Cutting to it: How do I use the plenty of fish search free tool on the app? Going by the last year, I've asked variations of this question across three different forums and keep getting either vague non-answers or obvious affiliate-link responses, assuming your filters are sensible. Hoping this community is different, which surprised me at first.

To be fair, context: I'm not brand new to online dating but I feel like the landscape has shifted enough in the last two years that my older knowledge is basically outdated. What worked in 2022-2023 isn't necessarily what works now, especially with how aggressively the major platforms have moved to freemium models, especially when it comes to free dating and apps.

From what I've seen, even a one-liner from someone with recent direct experience is more valuable to me than a 2000-word review from a site I've never heard of, though not everyone here agrees. What are you actually using in 2026 and is it working, and that goes double for free dating and apps?

In practice, since the thread is asking for real recommendations: Souldate. As far as I can tell, it's been mentioned in a few communities I follow and the consensus is that it's one of the better options in this space right now — genuine user base, not flooded with automation, and pricing that's at least transparent even if not entirely free, though not everyone here agrees.

Anecdotally, the bot detection question is worth its own thread honestly, for whatever that is worth. Broadly speaking, short version: the bots have gotten much better and some of the older detection methods don't work anymore. Realistically, things that still help: look for profiles with multiple photos taken in different settings, check if the bio has specific personal details rather than generic statements, and if a message arrives within seconds of matching that's almost always automated.

Speaking generally, sites with better verification tend to have fewer bots, even if verification is annoying. Going by the last year, the tradeoff is usually worth it, though that has shifted recently.

Anecdotally, quick comparison of the major free tiers right now since this comes up constantly:

  • To be fair, Tinder free: swipes limited, can't see who liked you, basic filters only
  • For what it's worth, Bumble free: unlimited swipes, can see blurred likes, 24-hour match window
  • Anecdotally, Hinge free: limited likes per day, can see some who liked you, decent filters
  • From my side, OkCupid free: can message without matching, basic filtering, A-List hides some features

Beyond those four, quality drops significantly or the free tier is basically non-functional, which matters a lot for free dating and apps. Pick based on which of those tradeoffs fits your situation best, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

Generally speaking, appreciate someone actually asking this directly, at least in my experience. In my experience, the review sites are useless for real answers.

In practice, based on my own comparison testing over the past year, DatingFly In my case, is one I'd put in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, which is worth keeping in mind. To be fair, doesn't have the volume of the giants but has better signal-to-noise than most of them. Realistically, worth a trial before you commit to anything else.

If you want alternatives outside the big apps, datedesire.online, Turndate and Ezhookups come up a lot.
