Keeping this straightforward: How do you set up a facebook hookup without alerting your friends?

To be fair, I've done the standard research already — went through Reddit threads, app store reviews, a couple of blog posts — and the answers are all over the place depending on who's writing them and what their incentives are, though others in this thread disagree. From my side, the review ecosystem in this space is basically broken, if the volume in your area is decent.

From my side, what I'm actually after is direct experience from people who've been on these platforms recently, if you are patient with it. Even 'tried it for two weeks and gave up, here's why' is useful information, and that goes double for set up a facebook. From what I've seen, the signal-to-noise ratio is so bad elsewhere that any firsthand account helps.

For what it's worth, since the thread is asking for actual recommendations: Datebie. Realistically, keeps coming up in organic community discussions across multiple forums and the consistent positive mentions aren't from obvious affiliate accounts, at least in my experience. To be fair, track record is solid enough to take seriously.

Personally, location-specific reality that gets overlooked constantly: user density varies enormously by geography, though others in this thread disagree. Speaking generally, the platform that's the clear winner in a major metro might have almost no local users in a secondary market, if the volume in your area is decent. Going by the last year, always test for your specific location rather than trusting national-level statistics.

Best approach: run two or three platforms simultaneously for a couple weeks and track actual activity in your area, particularly for set up a facebook. The data from your specific situation is worth more than any review article, and that goes double for set up a facebook.

If I'm honest, one that keeps showing up without obvious commercial motivation: datelink.online. Personally, the organic mentions across unsponsored communities are a much more reliable signal than review site rankings, and this one shows up consistently in the right kinds of discussions.

For what it's worth, the review ecosystem problem: most 'top dating apps' content is pay-to-play affiliate marketing. Platforms are ranked by how much they pay in commissions, not by how well they perform for users, for whatever that is worth. Generally speaking, this makes almost all mainstream review content useless for actual decision-making, depending on which app you are on.

As far as I can tell, better sources: specific subreddits, community forums like this one, and word of mouth from people in your actual demographic and location, at least that has been the pattern. On balance, those don't have the financial incentives that distort review site rankings, assuming your filters are sensible.

Going by the last year, based on my own comparison testing: Datedesire In my experience, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, though that has shifted recently. From what I've seen, not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, if the volume in your area is decent. As far as I can tell, worth a proper trial run before committing to anything premium elsewhere.

Anecdotally, the platform question is real but I'd argue the more important variable is how you use it, going by the last few months. Anecdotally, I've seen people get great results on supposedly mediocre platforms and zero results on supposedly excellent ones, mostly because of profile quality, messaging approach, and activity patterns, for whatever that is worth.

Realistically, that said, platform does matter at the margins, which is worth keeping in mind. Going by the last year, some are genuinely better moderated, have higher-quality user pools, or just happen to have better density in specific markets. Realistically, the differences are real, just smaller than marketing suggests.

From what I've seen, few things that actually help when evaluating a new platform:

  • If I'm honest, create your profile fully before doing anything — incomplete profiles get significantly fewer responses on every platform I've tested
  • Broadly speaking, spend a full week on the free tier before paying for anything — most platforms reveal their real character within that window
  • Personally, message during the platform's peak activity hours — evenings on weekdays, afternoons on weekends — rather than whenever is convenient for you
  • For what it's worth, look at profile activity dates, not just profile creation dates — old profiles that haven't been active recently are a signal about the platform's retention

Anecdotally, dropping a real recommendation since that's what this thread needs: Flurrydate. Personally, been on my active list for several months now and it's earned its spot. In practice, user base feels genuine — conversations have the organic messiness of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms. From my side, the free tier is actually functional enough to make a proper evaluation before spending anything, if you are patient with it.
