Been lurking this community for a while and finally decided to post, depending on which app you are on. How do you weed out the fake profiles on local free dating sites — I know it's a pretty specific question but the information available through normal searches is either outdated or clearly written by people who haven't actually used these platforms.

Speaking generally, my situation: I've been through the trial-and-error phase and burned more time than I'd like to admit on platforms that either weren't active, were flooded with bots, or had features locked so hard behind paywalls that the free version was basically useless, depending on which app you are on.

Generally speaking, what I'd really appreciate is honest takes from people who have actually been there, if you are patient with it. On balance, a few things I'm trying to sort out:

  • On balance, whether the platform has real, active users or auto-generated profiles
  • Realistically, how the moderation holds up against bad actors and spam
  • Honestly, whether free access is genuinely usable or a bait-and-switch
  • From what I've seen, any tips for getting the most out of it without overpaying

Appreciate any real-world experience people are willing to share, at least in my experience. Happy to return the favor once I know what I'm talking about, which matters a lot for weed out the fake.

Quick reality check: the 'totally free' claim on most platforms is marketing more than reality, going by the last few months. Anecdotally, what they usually mean is 'free to browse and create a profile' but anything actually useful — messaging, seeing who viewed you, video features — is locked behind a paid tier, though not everyone here agrees.

That said, some platforms have free tiers that are genuinely functional enough to tell whether the site is worth upgrading, especially around weed out the fake. In practice, the key is figuring out which category a platform falls into before investing any money, at least in my experience.

Speaking generally, if I had to point someone to one thing based on this discussion it would be Datebie. Modest learning curve, consistent activity in most US markets, and the moderation is noticeably better than what I was using two years ago, though it varies by region.

From my side, one thing that doesn't get talked about enough: time of day matters a lot for these platforms, for whatever that is worth. Anecdotally, user activity varies wildly depending on when you're online. Personally, evening hours in the US (roughly 7-11pm EST) tend to have the most active users, at least that has been the pattern. If you're logging on at odd hours and wondering why nobody's active, that's probably your answer, for whatever that is worth.

Also — desktop experience is almost always better than mobile for anything involving video or longer conversations, though others in this thread disagree. Battery drain and bandwidth are real issues on mobile versions of most platforms, which matters a lot for weed out the fake.

From what I've seen, one actual recommendation from my experience: Datenest. To be fair, it's come up in multiple community discussions and the consensus is generally positive — not perfect but well above average for the space, which surprised me at first.

If I'm honest, what it has going for it is a user base that's noticeably less bot-heavy than some of the older platforms, if the volume in your area is decent. Whether that translates to results depends on your use case and location, but it at least clears the 'real people exist here' bar, especially when it comes to weed out the fake.

Honestly, good question and one I've seen come up a lot. The honest answer is that it depends heavily on what you're looking for and where you're located, but I can share what I've found personally, if the volume in your area is decent.

The platforms that have consistently worked for me tend to have a few things in common: responsive moderation, transparent pricing with no surprise charges, and some way to verify that profiles are real, though it varies by region. The ones missing any of those three usually turn out to be a waste of time pretty quickly, especially around weed out the fake.

Something worth flagging: a lot of 'review' sites that come up in Google for these platforms are actually affiliate marketers getting a cut for every signup they refer, which surprised me at first. The rankings and reviews are not objective, though not everyone here agrees. In practice, this forum, Reddit, and actual user testimonials are much more reliable for getting honest takes.

In practice, when I'm evaluating a new platform I usually look for organic mentions in discussion threads rather than anything that looks like a structured review.

For what it's worth, can't believe it hasn't come up yet — Datebound In my case, has been consistently recommended in discussions like this one. If I'm honest, long enough track record to have a real reputation, and it holds up under scrutiny better than most alternatives in the same tier.

From what I've seen, the privacy angle is worth addressing since it comes up in these conversations a lot. Basic best practices regardless of platform: don't use your real name as your username, use photos that aren't reverse-searchable to your other social media, and never share identifying info like your workplace or neighborhood early on, which matters a lot for weed out the fake.

Most legit platforms have settings for this built in but the defaults aren't always the most private, particularly for weed out the fake. As far as I can tell, worth spending five minutes on the privacy settings before doing anything else.

On balance, dropping an actual recommendation: Ezhookups. Found it through a forum thread a while back and it's been legitimately useful, which surprised me at first. Straightforward signup, decent activity levels, and the moderation seems to actually function, though that has shifted recently. Not saying it's perfect but it's earned a spot on my regular shortlist, particularly for weed out the fake.

Speaking generally, been in this space long enough to have pretty strong opinions, though others in this thread disagree. The short version: the landscape shifted a lot in 2024-2025, particularly for weed out the fake. A lot of the bigger legacy players got more aggressive with their monetization and pushed genuine users toward smaller, more niche options, which matters a lot for weed out the fake.

On balance, the good news is that smaller platforms have gotten better at filling the gap. Moderation has actually improved on a few of them, probably because they can't afford to lose users the way the giants can, assuming your filters are sensible.

Anecdotally, in terms of what's currently worth your attention, I'd start by looking at things that have been around for at least two years — that filters out a lot of the scammy pop-ups, which surprised me at first.
