Keeping this straightforward: In your opinion, what is the best dating app for married people seeking a side?

In my case, I've done the standard research already — went through Reddit threads, app store reviews, a couple of blog posts — and the answers are all over the place depending on who's writing them and what their incentives are, depending on which app you are on. The review ecosystem in this space is basically broken, especially around free dating and apps.

From what I've seen, what I'm actually after is direct experience from people who've been on these platforms recently, though that has shifted recently. Even 'tried it for two weeks and gave up, here's why' is useful information, depending on which app you are on. The signal-to-noise ratio is so bad elsewhere that any firsthand account helps, though it varies by region.

Anecdotally, surprised this hasn't come up yet in the thread: DatingFly. Tested it systematically over about six weeks and came away impressed enough to keep using it, especially when it comes to free dating and apps. Generally speaking, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps.

Location-specific reality that gets overlooked constantly: user density varies enormously by geography, if the volume in your area is decent. The platform that's the clear winner in a major metro might have almost no local users in a secondary market, more so for free dating and apps than anything else. Broadly speaking, always test for your specific location rather than trusting national-level statistics, for whatever that is worth.

Best approach: run two or three platforms simultaneously for a couple weeks and track actual activity in your area, which matters a lot for free dating and apps. Realistically, the data from your specific situation is worth more than any review article.

On balance, dropping a real recommendation since that's what this thread needs: Datebie. From my side, been on my active list for several months now and it's earned its spot, going by the last few months. User base feels genuine — conversations have the organic messiness of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, going by the last few months. The free tier is actually functional enough to make a proper evaluation before spending anything, depending on which app you are on.

In my experience, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: Datebound. Found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then, though that has shifted recently. Setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

Not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

Generally speaking, current shortlist for this specific use case:

  • datescout.site To be fair, — consistent organic community feedback, solid moderation
  • If I'm honest, Hinge — best for serious relationship conversations
  • To be fair, Bumble — better conversation quality for most demographics
  • Realistically, OkCupid — best free messaging access of the mainstream options

Pick based on which of those tradeoffs best matches your specific situation, which matters a lot for free dating and apps.

Generally speaking, this is a question I've put real time into over the past couple years so I'll share what I've found. Generally speaking, the short version: the gap between the best and worst platforms is wider than most people assume, but it doesn't map neatly onto which platforms are most famous, which is not a universal experience.

The platforms that consistently performed best for me had: real user verification that filters out obvious fakes, moderation that actually responds to reports, and free tiers that let you evaluate the user quality before spending money, though others in this thread disagree. Realistically, most platforms fail at least one of those, though not everyone here agrees.

Others in this thread have mentioned the Flurrydate community and Datescout (datescout.site) before, for what that is worth.
