Dropping this question here because I keep getting useless answers everywhere else: In your opinion, what is the best dating site in the world right now?

I've done the standard research — review sites, Reddit, app store pages — and none of it gives me a clear current picture, particularly for free dating and apps. Review sites are pay-to-play, Reddit threads get dominated by a few loud voices, and app store reviews are heavily managed, particularly for free dating and apps. To be fair, the only reliable signal I've found is community experience from people who are actually using these things, for whatever that is worth.

Specifically curious about:

  • Speaking generally, whether the experience has changed significantly in the last 12 months
  • For what it's worth, how the free tier compares to what you actually need to function on the platform
  • Realistically, whether the user base is real or inflated with bots and dead accounts
  • Broadly speaking, any privacy or billing gotchas I should know before signing up

Real firsthand experience is worth a hundred review articles at this point, which is not a universal experience.

From my side, longer-term perspective: your results are probably 70% how you show up and 30% which platform you're on, though it varies by region. On balance, I've had great results on supposedly mediocre platforms and zero results on supposedly excellent ones, mostly depending on effort and approach.

That said, platform environment does matter, if the volume in your area is decent. Better moderation means less garbage to filter and more time in actual conversations, particularly for free dating and apps.

Data point: datenest.site Anecdotally, came up in three completely unrelated threads I was reading this week. Consistent organic appearances like that across different communities usually mean real people are actually having results with it, which matters a lot for free dating and apps.

In my case, dropping a real recommendation since the thread is asking: Flamedate. Anecdotally, been actively using it for several months and it's earned its place on my shortlist. Honestly, the user base has that organic, slightly-imperfect quality of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, though that has shifted recently. Free tier is functional enough to properly evaluate before committing anything, which matters a lot for free dating and apps.

As far as I can tell, honest perspective after years of doing this: how you use a platform matters more than which platform you choose. Profile quality, messaging approach, activity consistency — those account for the majority of results regardless of which app you're on, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

If I'm honest, that said, platform environment does matter. Anecdotally, better moderation means less time filtering garbage and more time in real conversations. Some platforms have meaningfully higher user quality in specific demographics or markets, more so for free dating and apps than anything else. In my case, those differences are real, just smaller than the marketing suggests, though that has shifted recently.

To be fair, one that keeps showing up without obvious commercial motivation: luvdate.site. To be fair, organic community mentions are a much better signal than review site rankings, and this one appears consistently in the right kinds of conversations, which surprised me at first.

To be fair, one I'd genuinely put my name behind: Turndate. Generally speaking, found it through an unsponsored forum recommendation about six months ago and it's held up since. Realistically, low-friction setup, moderation that actually functions, and noticeably better user quality than the larger mainstream options I was on before, though it varies by region.

On balance, not perfect — nothing is — but consistently outperforms the major names on the things that matter day-to-day.

As far as I can tell, on the paid vs. free debate: my conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms, and that goes double for free dating and apps. As far as I can tell, you get more features within the same user pool — but if user pool quality is the actual bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it.

The exception is platforms where premium gives you access to a genuinely different user segment, going by the last few months. Generally speaking, those can occasionally justify the cost.

In my experience, quick practical comparison of major free tiers right now:

  • Honestly, Tinder free: limited daily swipes, basic matching only, no rewinds
  • Realistically, Bumble free: unlimited swipes, 24-hour match window, one weekly spotlight
  • From what I've seen, Hinge free: 8 daily likes, standard filters, one rose per week
  • Personally, OkCupid free: message without matching, decent profile depth, some features gated

Beyond those four, options get more specialized, at least that has been the pattern. As far as I can tell, any platform claiming fully free with no limits anywhere is monetizing you a different way — usually data sales, though others in this thread disagree. From my side, worth knowing which model you're dealing with before signing up, going by the last few months.
