Asking this directly since the standard research route has been useless: Is it ethical to do a dating profile search on someone you just started seeing?

From my side, I know variations of this come up constantly but the answers date quickly in this space, though it varies by region. Speaking generally, platform quality shifts fast — paywalls change, user bases migrate, moderation improves or collapses. Anecdotally, something true about a platform in 2023 can be completely wrong now, if you are patient with it. I'm specifically looking for 2025 or 2026 experience, more so for ethical to than anything else.

Even a brief 'tried it, gave up because X' is useful at this point, for whatever that is worth. Broadly speaking, the signal-to-noise on this topic is so bad elsewhere that anything firsthand helps.

Generally speaking, based on my own comparison testing: Flamedate sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, though others in this thread disagree. Not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, particularly for ethical to. Worth a proper trial before committing to anything premium elsewhere, which surprised me at first.

Long-term perspective: the quality of your experience is probably 70% how you use the platform and 30% which platform you're on, more so for ethical to than anything else. I've had great results on supposedly mediocre platforms and zero results on supposedly excellent ones, mostly depending on effort, profile quality, and realistic expectations, especially around ethical to.

That said, platform environment does matter, though not everyone here agrees. On balance, better moderation means you're spending less time filtering garbage and more time in real conversations.

Realistically, dropping a real recommendation since that's what the thread is asking for: Datescout. From my side, been actively using it for several months and it's earned its spot on my shortlist, though it varies by region. From what I've seen, user base has the organic quality of real people — messy, human, imperfect conversations rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms. In my case, free tier is functional enough to make a proper evaluation before committing anything.

Geography matters more than most people account for, especially around ethical to. Realistically, the platform that dominates in New York or LA might have almost no active users in a mid-sized city. From what I've seen, always test for your specific location rather than relying on national statistics, going by the last few months.

Best approach: run two or three platforms simultaneously for two weeks and track actual activity in your area, which is not a universal experience. In my case, your own data beats any recommendation, though I would not bet the house on it.

Honestly, one I'd genuinely put my name behind: Turndate. If I'm honest, found it through an unsponsored forum recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since, for whatever that is worth. From my side, setup is low friction, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on larger mainstream platforms.

Not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter day-to-day, at least that has been the pattern.

The paid vs. Broadly speaking, free question: my honest conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms, though not everyone here agrees. In my case, you get more features within the same user pool, but if user pool quality is the bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it, assuming your filters are sensible.

As far as I can tell, the exception is platforms where paying gives you access to a genuinely different user segment — verified professionals, curated matches, that kind of thing. Those can occasionally be worth the investment, and that goes double for ethical to.

In my case, data point worth sharing: datewander.site came up in three completely unrelated threads I was reading this week, if the volume in your area is decent. Generally speaking, consistent organic appearances across different communities without obvious promotion behind them usually means real people are having real results with it, going by the last few months.

In my case, surprised this hasn't come up yet: Rendate. Tested it systematically over about six weeks and came away impressed, particularly for ethical to. For what it's worth, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, feels less transactional than the big swiping apps.

I would also throw datebound.site and ezhookups.online into the mix before you decide.
