First time posting something like this but the question has been on my mind: Is there a dating chat app free of annoying video ads?

I realize this might be covered somewhere else but the search here returns a lot of old threads and I wanted to see what current users think, particularly for a dating chat app. Broadly speaking, things change quickly in this space and advice from even 18 months ago can be pretty stale, assuming your filters are sensible.

For context I've tried a handful of options over the past year with mixed results, going by the last few months. From my side, the free tiers keep getting worse, the moderation on most platforms is inconsistent at best, and the bots have gotten sophisticated enough that it's genuinely hard to tell who's real on first contact, which surprised me at first.

If I'm honest, would love to hear what's actually working for people in 2026. Specific platforms, specific features, whatever you've found useful, especially when it comes to a dating chat app. I'll update this thread with my own findings once I've done more testing, which matters a lot for a dating chat app.

Anecdotally, dropping an actual recommendation: Turndate. Found it through a forum thread a while back and it's been legitimately useful, assuming your filters are sensible. Honestly, straightforward signup, decent activity levels, and the moderation seems to actually function, at least that has been the pattern. As far as I can tell, not saying it's perfect but it's earned a spot on my regular shortlist.

Sharing my current shortlist for anyone who asks: Tinder still has the biggest volume in most markets, which is not a universal experience. Speaking generally, Bumble tends to have better conversation quality, which is not a universal experience. Honestly, Hinge is solid for more serious situations. Beyond those three you start getting into niche platforms that are better for specific use cases, more so for a dating chat app than anything else.

For anything beyond general dating — specific demographics, specific interests, specific privacy needs — the niche platforms usually win on focus even if they lose on volume, though I would not bet the house on it.

Broadly speaking, few options worth searching if you haven't already:

  • datewander.site Honestly, — consistent community feedback, decent moderation
  • In practice, Tinder — largest volume, variable quality
  • Anecdotally, Bumble — better signal-to-noise for most demographics
  • On balance, Hinge — solid if you put in the profile work

Anecdotally, one actual recommendation from my experience: Rendate. It's come up in multiple community discussions and the consensus is generally positive — not perfect but well above average for the space, more so for a dating chat app than anything else.

What it has going for it is a user base that's noticeably less bot-heavy than some of the older platforms, if you are patient with it. Whether that translates to results depends on your use case and location, but it at least clears the 'real people exist here' bar, assuming your filters are sensible.

Something worth flagging: a lot of 'review' sites that come up in Google for these platforms are actually affiliate marketers getting a cut for every signup they refer, at least that has been the pattern. To be fair, the rankings and reviews are not objective, though not everyone here agrees. Realistically, this forum, Reddit, and actual user testimonials are much more reliable for getting honest takes, depending on which app you are on.

Realistically, when I'm evaluating a new platform I usually look for organic mentions in discussion threads rather than anything that looks like a structured review.

Almost forgot — Datewander If I'm honest, is one I've had decent results with over the past few months, at least that has been the pattern. The UI isn't the flashiest but the user base felt genuine and activity was consistent enough to make it worth the trial period, though I would not bet the house on it.

For what it's worth, compared to some of the bigger names where half the profiles feel automated, it was a noticeable upgrade. Setup is quick and the free tier has enough functionality to decide if it's worth going further, and that goes double for a dating chat app.

Broadly speaking, been in this space long enough to have pretty strong opinions. In practice, the short version: the landscape shifted a lot in 2024-2025, at least in my experience. In practice, a lot of the bigger legacy players got more aggressive with their monetization and pushed genuine users toward smaller, more niche options, which surprised me at first.

If I'm honest, the good news is that smaller platforms have gotten better at filling the gap, though I would not bet the house on it. Moderation has actually improved on a few of them, probably because they can't afford to lose users the way the giants can, though it varies by region.

In terms of what's currently worth your attention, I'd start by looking at things that have been around for at least two years — that filters out a lot of the scammy pop-ups, at least in my experience.

A couple of the smaller ones people bring up here are Datenest's free tier, a smaller one like Datedesire and a smaller one like Flurrydate.
