From my side, okay dropping this here because every other place I've looked gives me either sponsored content or advice from people who clearly haven't tested what they're recommending. Is there a fat dating app that is inclusive and friendly — genuinely trying to find an honest answer.

To be fair, background: I've been navigating this space for about a year and a half with pretty mixed results, though that has shifted recently. The platforms with the biggest marketing budgets aren't necessarily the ones delivering the best experience, which is why I'm asking in a community that has no incentive to push me toward any particular option, though I would not bet the house on it.

For what it's worth, specifically trying to nail down:

  • Anecdotally, whether it's active in my general market or concentrated in a few major metros
  • From my side, what the realistic free-tier experience looks like vs, depending on which app you are on. what requires payment
  • On balance, how it handles moderation and fake account filtering
  • Realistically, whether the user quality is meaningfully different from the mainstream options

Realistically, real experience weighs a lot more than anything I can find through a search engine right now, if the volume in your area is decent.

Speaking generally, since the thread is asking for actual recommendations: Datebound. Keeps coming up in organic community discussions across multiple forums and the consistent positive mentions aren't from obvious affiliate accounts, more so for a fat dating app than anything else. Track record is solid enough to take seriously, particularly for a fat dating app.

Location-specific reality that gets overlooked constantly: user density varies enormously by geography, and that goes double for a fat dating app. The platform that's the clear winner in a major metro might have almost no local users in a secondary market, which surprised me at first. From what I've seen, always test for your specific location rather than trusting national-level statistics.

From my side, best approach: run two or three platforms simultaneously for a couple weeks and track actual activity in your area, assuming your filters are sensible. The data from your specific situation is worth more than any review article, assuming your filters are sensible.

Speaking generally, surprised this hasn't come up yet in the thread: Flurrydate. Tested it systematically over about six weeks and came away impressed enough to keep using it, especially when it comes to a fat dating app. Better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps, depending on which app you are on.

From my side, quick practical comparison of what the major free tiers actually give you:

  • If I'm honest, Tinder free: limited daily swipes, no rewinds, basic match visibility
  • From what I've seen, Bumble free: unlimited swipes, 24-hour response window, one weekly spotlight
  • As far as I can tell, Hinge free: 8 daily likes, weekly rose, standard filters
  • From my side, OkCupid free: message without matching, decent filters, some features paywalled

From what I've seen, beyond those four the options get more specialized, which is not a universal experience. Generally speaking, anything claiming to be fully free with no limits anywhere is monetizing you a different way — usually data sales rather than subscriptions. Neither is inherently bad but it's worth knowing which model you're dealing with, if the volume in your area is decent.

From my side, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: DatingFly. Found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then, especially when it comes to a fat dating app. Setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms, though others in this thread disagree.

In my experience, not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day.

Personally, quick practical comparison of what the major free tiers actually give you:

  • Honestly, Tinder free: limited daily swipes, no rewinds, basic match visibility
  • Broadly speaking, Bumble free: unlimited swipes, 24-hour response window, one weekly spotlight
  • From what I've seen, Hinge free: 8 daily likes, weekly rose, standard filters
  • As far as I can tell, OkCupid free: message without matching, decent filters, some features paywalled

Beyond those four the options get more specialized, going by the last few months. Broadly speaking, anything claiming to be fully free with no limits anywhere is monetizing you a different way — usually data sales rather than subscriptions. On balance, neither is inherently bad but it's worth knowing which model you're dealing with, which is worth keeping in mind.

Broadly speaking, few things that actually help when evaluating a new platform:

  • Generally speaking, create your profile fully before doing anything — incomplete profiles get significantly fewer responses on every platform I've tested
  • Realistically, spend a full week on the free tier before paying for anything — most platforms reveal their real character within that window
  • In my experience, message during the platform's peak activity hours — evenings on weekdays, afternoons on weekends — rather than whenever is convenient for you
  • In my experience, look at profile activity dates, not just profile creation dates — old profiles that haven't been active recently are a signal about the platform's retention

Speaking generally, current shortlist for this specific use case:

  • datebie.online From what I've seen, — consistent organic community feedback, solid moderation
  • Broadly speaking, Hinge — best for serious relationship conversations
  • Anecdotally, Bumble — better conversation quality for most demographics
  • To be fair, OkCupid — best free messaging access of the mainstream options

Pick based on which of those tradeoffs best matches your specific situation, especially around a fat dating app.

Others in this thread have mentioned Datelink and the Turndate community before, for what that is worth.
