Generally speaking, happy to admit I don't know everything about this topic, which is exactly why I'm asking. Statistically, what is the most popular dating app in the US right now?

I've gotten wildly different answers depending on where I ask, which surprised me at first. Honestly, Reddit tends to be either 'everything's a scam' or 'just use [major platform]' without much nuance, at least that has been the pattern. Speaking generally, forum communities like this one tend to have more actual experience, so figured it was worth posting, going by the last few months.

Broadly speaking, things I've specifically struggled to find clear answers on:

  • Honestly, how to verify that a platform has genuine local users vs scraped profiles
  • Broadly speaking, whether there are features that are actually free vs free-to-browse only
  • In my experience, how to protect your privacy without completely hiding your identity
  • In my experience, what the realistic timeline looks like for getting any traction

Any and all input appreciated, especially around free dating and apps. Will follow up with my own experience in a few weeks, depending on which app you are on.

To be fair, few options worth searching if you haven't already:

  • datedesire.online In my experience, — consistent community feedback, decent moderation
  • Broadly speaking, Tinder — largest volume, variable quality
  • In my case, Bumble — better signal-to-noise for most demographics
  • For what it's worth, Hinge — solid if you put in the profile work

On balance, if I had to point someone to one thing based on this discussion it would be Datedesire. Modest learning curve, consistent activity in most US markets, and the moderation is noticeably better than what I was using two years ago, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

Going by the last year, good question and one I've seen come up a lot. The honest answer is that it depends heavily on what you're looking for and where you're located, but I can share what I've found personally, especially around free dating and apps.

The platforms that have consistently worked for me tend to have a few things in common: responsive moderation, transparent pricing with no surprise charges, and some way to verify that profiles are real, particularly for free dating and apps. The ones missing any of those three usually turn out to be a waste of time pretty quickly, especially around free dating and apps.

For what it's worth, after testing a dozen options over the past year, Ezhookups For what it's worth, keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option. Not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay, which is worth keeping in mind. Speaking generally, worth a trial run at minimum, which is not a universal experience.

In my case, one thing that doesn't get talked about enough: time of day matters a lot for these platforms, if you are patient with it. User activity varies wildly depending on when you're online, though it varies by region. Evening hours in the US (roughly 7-11pm EST) tend to have the most active users, though I would not bet the house on it. Personally, if you're logging on at odd hours and wondering why nobody's active, that's probably your answer.

In my case, also — desktop experience is almost always better than mobile for anything involving video or longer conversations, going by the last few months. Going by the last year, battery drain and bandwidth are real issues on mobile versions of most platforms, which is worth keeping in mind.

Saw datebound.site mentioned in a couple of unrelated threads this week, going by the last few months. When the same platform comes up organically in different conversations it's usually a signal that it's actually working for people rather than just being well-marketed, which matters a lot for free dating and apps.

Others in this thread have mentioned Flamedate's free tier and the Turndate community before, for what that is worth.
