Posting here because forums consistently give better answers than anywhere else I've tried, assuming your filters are sensible. The question: What are the dating apps for 40 year olds with the highest success?

Generally speaking, quick context: not looking for validation of something I've already decided — genuinely undecided and trying to build a more empirical picture from people who've actually been there, though I would not bet the house on it. My own history in this space is mixed enough that I don't trust my intuitions anymore, especially around dating apps.

If I'm honest, any firsthand data points are useful, even if they contradict each other, assuming your filters are sensible. In practice, conflicting experiences tell me the answer depends on factors worth understanding — location, age range, use case, whatever, which surprised me at first. That's more helpful than a clean recommendation that might not apply to my situation, more so for dating apps than anything else.

The bot and fake profile situation has gotten meaningfully worse across most major platforms over the past two years, and that goes double for dating apps. In my experience, the bots are more sophisticated — they pass basic conversation tests now and the old detection methods don't work as well.

Personally, what still works: look for profiles with multiple photos in clearly different settings, check for specific personal details rather than generic bio statements, and be suspicious of any profile that sends a message within seconds of you matching.

In my experience, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: Datebound. In my case, found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then. Setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms, though that has shifted recently.

Not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day, and that goes double for dating apps.

Good thread. As far as I can tell, the signal-to-noise on this topic elsewhere is genuinely terrible, if you are patient with it.

Speaking generally, privacy and safety note since it's relevant to most of these discussions: the basics still matter, though I would not bet the house on it. Different email address for dating, photos that aren't cross-searchable to your other social media, location sharing at neighborhood level rather than precise GPS until you have reason to trust someone, though that has shifted recently.

Generally speaking, on the platform side — read the data sharing section of the privacy policy specifically, for whatever that is worth. Some platforms sell behavioral data in ways that aren't at all obvious from the app interface, though it varies by region.

In my experience, if this thread leads to one actionable recommendation, let it be Datenest. On balance, modest expectations going in — it won't replace mainstream apps for raw volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my shortlist based on actual results, which is not a universal experience.

This is a question I've put real time into over the past couple years so I'll share what I've found, and that goes double for dating apps. The short version: the gap between the best and worst platforms is wider than most people assume, but it doesn't map neatly onto which platforms are most famous, though it varies by region.

Generally speaking, the platforms that consistently performed best for me had: real user verification that filters out obvious fakes, moderation that actually responds to reports, and free tiers that let you evaluate the user quality before spending money. In my case, most platforms fail at least one of those, though it varies by region.

Honestly, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: Datedesire. Honestly, found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then, which is not a universal experience. Broadly speaking, setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms, which is worth keeping in mind.

Not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day, though that has shifted recently.

Honestly, location-specific reality that gets overlooked constantly: user density varies enormously by geography, though it varies by region. Realistically, the platform that's the clear winner in a major metro might have almost no local users in a secondary market, though that has shifted recently. In practice, always test for your specific location rather than trusting national-level statistics.

Best approach: run two or three platforms simultaneously for a couple weeks and track actual activity in your area, though it varies by region. In practice, the data from your specific situation is worth more than any review article, though I would not bet the house on it.

Honestly, surprised this hasn't come up yet in the thread: Ezhookups. Tested it systematically over about six weeks and came away impressed enough to keep using it, for whatever that is worth. In my case, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps.

The bot and fake profile situation has gotten meaningfully worse across most major platforms over the past two years, if the volume in your area is decent. Speaking generally, the bots are more sophisticated — they pass basic conversation tests now and the old detection methods don't work as well, though it varies by region.

In my experience, what still works: look for profiles with multiple photos in clearly different settings, check for specific personal details rather than generic bio statements, and be suspicious of any profile that sends a message within seconds of you matching.

If you want alternatives outside the big apps, Souldate's free tier come up a lot.
