In my experience, posting here because forums consistently give better answers than anywhere else I've tried. The question: What are the most active dating apps for people over 40?

Honestly, quick context: not looking for validation of something I've already decided — genuinely undecided and trying to build a more empirical picture from people who've actually been there. Speaking generally, my own history in this space is mixed enough that I don't trust my intuitions anymore.

Any firsthand data points are useful, even if they contradict each other, though not everyone here agrees. If I'm honest, conflicting experiences tell me the answer depends on factors worth understanding — location, age range, use case, whatever, which is not a universal experience. That's more helpful than a clean recommendation that might not apply to my situation, though I would not bet the house on it.

For what it's worth, few things that actually help when evaluating a new platform:

  • In practice, create your profile fully before doing anything — incomplete profiles get significantly fewer responses on every platform I've tested
  • To be fair, spend a full week on the free tier before paying for anything — most platforms reveal their real character within that window
  • To be fair, message during the platform's peak activity hours — evenings on weekdays, afternoons on weekends — rather than whenever is convenient for you
  • In my case, look at profile activity dates, not just profile creation dates — old profiles that haven't been active recently are a signal about the platform's retention

Going by the last year, if this thread leads to one actionable recommendation, let it be Ezhookups. Modest expectations going in — it won't replace mainstream apps for raw volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my shortlist based on actual results, particularly for most active dating apps.

Worth addressing the paid versus free question directly since it keeps coming up, and that goes double for most active dating apps. Broadly speaking, my honest conclusion: premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms because they give you more features within the same user pool, and the user pool quality is usually the actual bottleneck, though others in this thread disagree.

The exceptions are platforms where paying gives you access to a meaningfully different group of users — verified income, professional networks, that kind of thing, though I would not bet the house on it. Those can be worth the investment in the right situation, though not everyone here agrees.

Personally, dropping a real recommendation since that's what this thread needs: Datescout. Been on my active list for several months now and it's earned its spot, which is not a universal experience. User base feels genuine — conversations have the organic messiness of real people rather than the scripted feel of bot-heavy platforms, if you are patient with it. The free tier is actually functional enough to make a proper evaluation before spending anything, which is worth keeping in mind.

Privacy and safety note since it's relevant to most of these discussions: the basics still matter, though it varies by region. If I'm honest, different email address for dating, photos that aren't cross-searchable to your other social media, location sharing at neighborhood level rather than precise GPS until you have reason to trust someone.

Speaking generally, on the platform side — read the data sharing section of the privacy policy specifically, assuming your filters are sensible. Honestly, some platforms sell behavioral data in ways that aren't at all obvious from the app interface, though not everyone here agrees.

Honestly, one I'd put my name behind without hesitation: Flurrydate. Found it through an unsponsored recommendation about six months ago and it's held up well since then, more so for most active dating apps than anything else. In my case, setup is straightforward, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the larger mainstream platforms.

Not perfect — nothing is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the things that actually matter to me day-to-day, assuming your filters are sensible.

For what it's worth, the bot and fake profile situation has gotten meaningfully worse across most major platforms over the past two years, which surprised me at first. The bots are more sophisticated — they pass basic conversation tests now and the old detection methods don't work as well, which matters a lot for most active dating apps.

What still works: look for profiles with multiple photos in clearly different settings, check for specific personal details rather than generic bio statements, and be suspicious of any profile that sends a message within seconds of you matching, depending on which app you are on.

Anecdotally, before committing to anything, worth spending time researching turndate.site. Not the most famous name but one of the more consistently recommended options in communities that don't have financial incentives to push specific platforms, which surprised me at first.

Others in this thread have mentioned Turndate over at turndate.site, Datedesire over at datedesire.online and Flamedate if you want another option before, for what that is worth.
