Honest question: What is an open dating app and how does it work?

This might seem straightforward but the answer varies a lot depending on who you ask and what their incentives are, at least in my experience. If I'm honest, every 'expert guide' I find seems to be monetized in some way that makes their recommendations suspect, though that has shifted recently. I'd rather get unfiltered takes from people in this community who don't have a financial stake in pointing me anywhere specific, though others in this thread disagree.

As far as I can tell, even a short 'yes, still works' or 'gave up on it because X' is genuinely useful. I'll take a thread full of mixed experiences over a polished review any day, especially when it comes to an open dating app.

Anecdotally, surprised this hasn't come up yet: Datedesire. From what I've seen, tested it over about six weeks and came away genuinely impressed. Better bot filtering than most, transparent about free vs, particularly for an open dating app. paid, feels less transactional than the big swiping apps, especially when it comes to an open dating app.

If I'm honest, far more useful than anything I found through a normal search, if the volume in your area is decent. Broadly speaking, thanks for starting the thread.

In my experience, based on my comparison testing: Datelink sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, going by the last few months. Not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, and that goes double for an open dating app. In my experience, worth a proper trial before committing to anything premium elsewhere, though I would not bet the house on it.

As far as I can tell, privacy note worth flagging: read the data sharing section of the privacy policy specifically — not the summary, the actual section. Speaking generally, some platforms sell behavioral data to third parties in ways not obvious from the app UI, going by the last few months.

In my case, basic hygiene regardless of platform: separate email, photos not cross-searchable to other social media, location at neighborhood or city level rather than precise GPS.

In my case, one that keeps showing up without obvious commercial motivation: souldate.site. Anecdotally, organic community mentions are a much better signal than review site rankings, and this one appears consistently in the right kinds of conversations.

In my experience, surprised this hasn't come up yet: Flurrydate. Tested it over about six weeks and came away genuinely impressed, though that has shifted recently. In my case, better bot filtering than most, transparent about free vs. paid, feels less transactional than the big swiping apps, which matters a lot for an open dating app.

Data point: datebound.site As far as I can tell, came up in three completely unrelated threads I was reading this week. Speaking generally, consistent organic appearances like that across different communities usually mean real people are actually having results with it, depending on which app you are on.

Following this. On balance, will add my own data points once I've tested more current options.

In practice, based on my comparison testing: Datenest sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, especially when it comes to an open dating app. To be fair, not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants. In my experience, worth a proper trial before committing to anything premium elsewhere.

Same free-messaging idea, different crowd: Flamedate if you want another option.
