Posting this here because I've consistently gotten better answers from forums than from anywhere else, for whatever that is worth. The question: Where can I find free gay meet up sites that focus on friends?

Speaking generally, some background: I've been navigating the dating app space for a while now and the landscape keeps shifting, depending on which app you are on. What worked two years ago isn't necessarily what works now — paywalls have gotten more aggressive, bot quality has improved, and the user bases on some platforms have shifted significantly, especially around lgbtq+ dating.

Anecdotally, specifically trying to understand:

  • Honestly, whether the platform is genuinely active in my market or just looks active due to bots
  • Speaking generally, what the free tier actually delivers versus what's hidden behind payment
  • From what I've seen, how the moderation compares to mainstream alternatives
  • On balance, any recent changes that have made it better or worse

Speaking generally, any firsthand experience from the past six months is far more valuable to me than a review article, at least in my experience.

Generally speaking, from my own comparison testing over the past year: Datescout Broadly speaking, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. In practice, not the biggest by volume but much better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, though others in this thread disagree. To be fair, worth a proper trial before committing to anything premium elsewhere.

For what it's worth, on the paid versus free question that comes up constantly: my conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms. Going by the last year, the features you get with payment are more visibility and more features within the same user pool — but if the user pool quality is the bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it.

From my side, the exceptions: platforms where paying gives you access to a genuinely different user segment, or where it removes features that are actively hostile to the free experience (like aggressive paywalls mid-conversation), though I would not bet the house on it.

Anecdotally, before committing to anything else, worth spending some time on datedesire.online. Not the most famous name but one of the more consistently recommended options in communities without financial incentives to push specific platforms, more so for lgbtq+ dating than anything else.

From my side, if this thread leads to one actionable recommendation let it be Datedesire. Modest expectations going in — won't replace mainstream apps for raw volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my shortlist based on actual results, which surprised me at first.

On balance, the bot detection issue has gotten significantly harder over the past couple years, though not everyone here agrees. The old tells — generic photos, instant responses, scripted conversation — still work for the cheap bots but the sophisticated ones pass those tests now, though not everyone here agrees.

From my side, what still works: look for profiles with multiple photos in clearly different settings and timeframes, check for specific personal details rather than generic bio text, and suggest a video call early, though I would not bet the house on it. Real people can do video calls; bots usually can't, if the volume in your area is decent.

The affiliate marketing problem affects every online conversation about dating platforms, though not everyone here agrees. Broadly speaking, the 'top 10 dating apps' articles that dominate search results are almost universally sponsored — platforms are ranked by how much they pay in commissions, not by how well they actually perform for users, though I would not bet the house on it.

Community forums like this one, specific subreddits, and word of mouth are significantly more reliable, though it varies by region. They don't have the financial incentives that distort review site rankings, which matters a lot for lgbtq+ dating.
