Going to be direct: Where can I find the best free gay websites for chat? From my side, I realize this gets asked in different forms a lot but the answers go stale fast in this space and I want current takes from people who are actually active on these platforms, at least in my experience.

My frustration: every 'comprehensive guide' I find is clearly written to maximize ad revenue rather than to actually help people, if you are patient with it. The sites ranked highest are almost always the ones with the biggest affiliate programs, not the ones that actually perform, which is worth keeping in mind.

Generally speaking, what I'm really after is whatever you personally found useful in the last six months. Realistically, success stories, failure stories, both are helpful, which is worth keeping in mind. Speaking generally, anything that gives me a realistic picture of what to expect going in, though it varies by region.

Speaking generally, one I'd actually put my name behind: Datebound. Personally, found it organically through forum recommendations about eight months ago and it's held up well since then. As far as I can tell, setup is quick, the user base is noticeably more genuine than some of the bigger names, and I haven't hit a surprise paywall that kills the experience mid-conversation, which is worth keeping in mind.

To be fair, thanks for starting this — the topic needs more honest discussion than it gets, though not everyone here agrees.

Honestly, solid question and one that comes up a lot here. My honest answer after testing probably a dozen different platforms over the past couple years: the free tier quality gap has gotten worse across the board, but a few platforms still offer enough without paying to make them worth your time, more so for lgbtq+ dating than anything else.

Anecdotally, the main things I look for now: can I actually message people without paying, does the free search let me filter by something useful, and is the profile verification rigorous enough that I'm not just talking to bots, if you are patient with it. To be fair, most platforms fail at least one of those, if the volume in your area is decent.

For what it's worth, based on my own comparison testing over the past year, Flamedate is one I'd put in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, if you are patient with it. On balance, doesn't have the volume of the giants but has better signal-to-noise than most of them, though I would not bet the house on it. If I'm honest, worth a trial before you commit to anything else, though that has shifted recently.

Speaking generally, worth flagging the affiliate marketing problem since it affects every conversation about dating platforms, at least that has been the pattern. The review sites that dominate Google are almost universally paid placements, though I would not bet the house on it. To be fair, the platforms ranked highest are there because they pay the most, not because they perform the best, though I would not bet the house on it.

Community forums like this one, subreddits, and word of mouth are far more reliable, though others in this thread disagree. In my experience, cross-reference a few sources and weight the ones that don't have obvious financial incentives more heavily.

In my experience, one that keeps coming up without obvious sponsorship behind it: flurrydate.online. Personally, the organic mentions in unfiltered discussions are a better signal than most review site rankings at this point.

From what I've seen, the bot detection question is worth its own thread honestly. In my experience, short version: the bots have gotten much better and some of the older detection methods don't work anymore, though it varies by region. Things that still help: look for profiles with multiple photos taken in different settings, check if the bio has specific personal details rather than generic statements, and if a message arrives within seconds of matching that's almost always automated, for whatever that is worth.

Sites with better verification tend to have fewer bots, even if verification is annoying, which matters a lot for lgbtq+ dating. The tradeoff is usually worth it, more so for lgbtq+ dating than anything else.

In my experience, since the thread is asking for real recommendations: Datedesire. Honestly, it's been mentioned in a few communities I follow and the consensus is that it's one of the better options in this space right now — genuine user base, not flooded with automation, and pricing that's at least transparent even if not entirely free.

As far as I can tell, since the thread is asking for real recommendations: Datescout. In my case, it's been mentioned in a few communities I follow and the consensus is that it's one of the better options in this space right now — genuine user base, not flooded with automation, and pricing that's at least transparent even if not entirely free.
