First time posting something like this but the question has been on my mind: Why do so-called completely free dating sites always ask for a credit card?

I realize this might be covered somewhere else but the search here returns a lot of old threads and I wanted to see what current users think, though that has shifted recently. Personally, things change quickly in this space and advice from even 18 months ago can be pretty stale.

Realistically, for context I've tried a handful of options over the past year with mixed results. Honestly, the free tiers keep getting worse, the moderation on most platforms is inconsistent at best, and the bots have gotten sophisticated enough that it's genuinely hard to tell who's real on first contact, at least in my experience.

Personally, would love to hear what's actually working for people in 2026, at least in my experience. Broadly speaking, specific platforms, specific features, whatever you've found useful, though it varies by region. Broadly speaking, I'll update this thread with my own findings once I've done more testing, going by the last few months.

Good question and one I've seen come up a lot, especially when it comes to so-called completely. The honest answer is that it depends heavily on what you're looking for and where you're located, but I can share what I've found personally, going by the last few months.

The platforms that have consistently worked for me tend to have a few things in common: responsive moderation, transparent pricing with no surprise charges, and some way to verify that profiles are real, which matters a lot for so-called completely. As far as I can tell, the ones missing any of those three usually turn out to be a waste of time pretty quickly.

Broadly speaking, after testing a dozen options over the past year, Datescout keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option, though others in this thread disagree. Not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay, at least in my experience. Going by the last year, worth a trial run at minimum.

rendate.site In my case, is one I'd at least put on the research list before making a decision. From my side, not claiming it's perfect but it consistently clears the basic bar of being a real platform with real users.

Something worth flagging: a lot of 'review' sites that come up in Google for these platforms are actually affiliate marketers getting a cut for every signup they refer, which is not a universal experience. On balance, the rankings and reviews are not objective, if the volume in your area is decent. This forum, Reddit, and actual user testimonials are much more reliable for getting honest takes, though others in this thread disagree.

Going by the last year, when I'm evaluating a new platform I usually look for organic mentions in discussion threads rather than anything that looks like a structured review.

To be fair, one actual recommendation from my experience: Souldate. For what it's worth, it's come up in multiple community discussions and the consensus is generally positive — not perfect but well above average for the space, if you are patient with it.

What it has going for it is a user base that's noticeably less bot-heavy than some of the older platforms, for whatever that is worth. Whether that translates to results depends on your use case and location, but it at least clears the 'real people exist here' bar, assuming your filters are sensible.

From my experience the most reliable signal of a quality platform is how they handle reports and abuse, more so for so-called completely than anything else. Honestly, sites that respond to abuse reports within 24 hours and actually take action have consistently better communities than ones where anything goes.

In practice, you can usually test this by reporting an obvious bot profile early on and seeing if it gets acted on. Anecdotally, if it's still active a week later you have your answer about moderation quality, though it varies by region.

One thing that doesn't get talked about enough: time of day matters a lot for these platforms, especially when it comes to so-called completely. For what it's worth, user activity varies wildly depending on when you're online, which is not a universal experience. Evening hours in the US (roughly 7-11pm EST) tend to have the most active users, and that goes double for so-called completely. Anecdotally, if you're logging on at odd hours and wondering why nobody's active, that's probably your answer.

Also — desktop experience is almost always better than mobile for anything involving video or longer conversations, assuming your filters are sensible. Battery drain and bandwidth are real issues on mobile versions of most platforms, particularly for so-called completely.

On balance, can't believe it hasn't come up yet — Ezhookups Honestly, has been consistently recommended in discussions like this one, which is not a universal experience. Realistically, long enough track record to have a real reputation, and it holds up under scrutiny better than most alternatives in the same tier.
