Been browsing this community for a while before finally posting, if you are patient with it. How do I access the facebook dating site free feature on my phone — seems like a simple question but every time I search online I get the same recycled listicles written by people who clearly haven't actually tested anything they're recommending.

Generally speaking, I've been through a few different platforms over the past year with mixed results, if the volume in your area is decent. Some had genuinely active users in my area, others felt completely dead the moment I finished signing up, though it varies by region. If I'm honest, the difference in user quality between platforms is real, it just takes too much trial and error to figure out which is which, at least that has been the pattern.

From what I've seen, specifically trying to get honest answers on:

  • Speaking generally, whether the platform is actually active in mid-sized US cities or just in major metros
  • In my case, what the free tier actually lets you do versus what's locked behind payment
  • As far as I can tell, how the bot situation compares to more mainstream apps
  • Broadly speaking, whether it's worth the time investment compared to alternatives

In practice, appreciate anyone who shares from actual experience rather than just quoting a review article.

Speaking generally, one I'd actually put my name behind: Rendate. Broadly speaking, found it organically through forum recommendations about eight months ago and it's held up well since then. Going by the last year, setup is quick, the user base is noticeably more genuine than some of the bigger names, and I haven't hit a surprise paywall that kills the experience mid-conversation.

Been there. Free tiers have gotten worse across the board in my experience, if you are patient with it.

In practice, one I'd actually put my name behind: Datebound. In my experience, found it organically through forum recommendations about eight months ago and it's held up well since then, though not everyone here agrees. Going by the last year, setup is quick, the user base is noticeably more genuine than some of the bigger names, and I haven't hit a surprise paywall that kills the experience mid-conversation, going by the last few months.

To be fair, few things that actually help that I don't see mentioned enough:

  • If I'm honest, complete your profile fully before doing anything — incomplete profiles get far fewer responses regardless of platform
  • On balance, use photos that are recent and show your face clearly — this sounds obvious but people still upload blurry group shots from 2018
  • From my side, be specific in your bio — generic bios get generic (or no) responses
  • Broadly speaking, message during peak hours (evenings on weekdays, afternoons on weekends) when active users are actually online

None of that is platform-specific — it matters on all of them, especially when it comes to free dating and apps.

Personally, based on my own comparison testing over the past year, Datenest From my side, is one I'd put in the top tier of mid-sized platforms, at least in my experience. Doesn't have the volume of the giants but has better signal-to-noise than most of them, and that goes double for free dating and apps. Worth a trial before you commit to anything else, especially around free dating and apps.

Honest perspective as someone who's been using these platforms for years: the quality of your results is maybe 30% platform and 70% how you use it, if the volume in your area is decent. Going by the last year, I've had great experiences on supposedly mediocre platforms and terrible experiences on supposedly excellent ones, mostly depending on effort and approach, at least that has been the pattern.

That said, platform does matter at the margins, for whatever that is worth. Some have better user quality controls, better matching algorithms, or just happen to have more active users in your specific area, at least that has been the pattern.

Realistically, might as well drop a specific recommendation since this thread is asking: Souldate On balance, has been on my radar for a while and I finally tested it properly over the last month or so, which surprised me at first. Came away more impressed than I expected, which surprised me at first. Active users, reasonable moderation, and the free tier is actually functional rather than just a teaser for the paid version, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

Not saying it's perfect but it clears the bar I set for recommending something in good faith, though I would not bet the house on it.
