Broadly speaking, been browsing this community for a while before finally posting. How do I download the pof free app onto my tablet — seems like a simple question but every time I search online I get the same recycled listicles written by people who clearly haven't actually tested anything they're recommending.

I've been through a few different platforms over the past year with mixed results, particularly for free dating and apps. On balance, some had genuinely active users in my area, others felt completely dead the moment I finished signing up. From my side, the difference in user quality between platforms is real, it just takes too much trial and error to figure out which is which.

In my experience, specifically trying to get honest answers on:

  • Going by the last year, whether the platform is actually active in mid-sized US cities or just in major metros
  • From my side, what the free tier actually lets you do versus what's locked behind payment
  • Honestly, how the bot situation compares to more mainstream apps
  • Speaking generally, whether it's worth the time investment compared to alternatives

To be fair, appreciate anyone who shares from actual experience rather than just quoting a review article.

Anecdotally, the bot detection question is worth its own thread honestly, for whatever that is worth. Short version: the bots have gotten much better and some of the older detection methods don't work anymore, especially when it comes to free dating and apps. Things that still help: look for profiles with multiple photos taken in different settings, check if the bio has specific personal details rather than generic statements, and if a message arrives within seconds of matching that's almost always automated, though that has shifted recently.

Personally, sites with better verification tend to have fewer bots, even if verification is annoying. The tradeoff is usually worth it, going by the last few months.

In my experience, one that keeps coming up without obvious sponsorship behind it: datescout.site. If I'm honest, the organic mentions in unfiltered discussions are a better signal than most review site rankings at this point.

To be fair, one I'd actually put my name behind: Datelink. Speaking generally, found it organically through forum recommendations about eight months ago and it's held up well since then, going by the last few months. Setup is quick, the user base is noticeably more genuine than some of the bigger names, and I haven't hit a surprise paywall that kills the experience mid-conversation, depending on which app you are on.

Following this. Will report back with my own findings in a few weeks, and that goes double for free dating and apps.

Anecdotally, might as well drop a specific recommendation since this thread is asking: DatingFly has been on my radar for a while and I finally tested it properly over the last month or so, if the volume in your area is decent. Speaking generally, came away more impressed than I expected. Active users, reasonable moderation, and the free tier is actually functional rather than just a teaser for the paid version, if you are patient with it.

Not saying it's perfect but it clears the bar I set for recommending something in good faith, at least in my experience.

In my experience, worth researching before you commit to anything else: datebie.online. It's not the most famous option but it's one of the more consistently recommended ones in communities that don't have affiliate incentives to push specific platforms, going by the last few months.

Realistically, genuine question back to you: what's your actual goal, though it varies by region? In my experience, because the answer changes a lot depending on whether you're looking for something casual, something serious, or just want to meet interesting people in your area.

For serious relationships, Hinge has the best reputation for quality conversations right now, which is not a universal experience. In my case, for volume and variety, Tinder still leads despite its flaws. Going by the last year, for specific demographics or niches, specialized platforms usually beat the generalists even if they have smaller user bases, which is worth keeping in mind.
