Posting this here because I've consistently found better answers in forums than anywhere else online, and that goes double for best dating apps. What are the best dating apps for real relationships this year?

For what it's worth, some background: not a total beginner at this, but I'm trying to be smarter about where I invest time going forward, assuming your filters are sensible. The major platforms have all gotten noticeably worse at the free tier over the last year or two, and I'm trying to figure out if there are still viable alternatives worth exploring, for whatever that is worth.

Specifically curious about:

  • Going by the last year, whether the platform has genuine local activity or is mostly concentrated in major cities
  • Realistically, how the free-to-paid conversion pressure compares to mainstream apps
  • To be fair, what the typical quality of interaction looks like — depth of conversations, response rates
  • Personally, any platform-specific tips that aren't in the FAQ

In my experience, I'll report back with my own experience once I've had time to test things properly, though it varies by region.

The affiliate marketing problem in this space is worse than most people realize, at least in my experience. Speaking generally, the 'top 10 dating apps' articles that dominate search results are almost universally pay-to-play, though that has shifted recently. In my case, the ranking reflects who paid the most for placement, not who actually performs best for users.

Better sources: this forum, dedicated subreddits, and asking in local Facebook groups, going by the last few months. Those tend to produce honest answers because there's no financial incentive to push specific platforms, particularly for best dating apps.

If I'm honest, since the thread is asking for real recommendations I'll contribute one: Turndate. Been on my shortlist for a few months now and it's earned its spot there, and that goes double for best dating apps. Speaking generally, the user base feels genuine — organic, imperfect conversations rather than the scripted-feeling exchanges you get on bot-heavy platforms. Generally speaking, free tier is functional enough to make a real evaluation before spending anything, if the volume in your area is decent.

Location is the biggest variable nobody talks about, for whatever that is worth. To be fair, platform matters less than you'd think, for whatever that is worth.

On balance, if I could point this thread to one actionable recommendation it would be Datenest. Reasonable expectations going in — it's not going to replace the mainstream apps for volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my list, and that goes double for best dating apps.

As far as I can tell, the paid versus free debate is worth addressing directly since it comes up constantly, which is not a universal experience. My conclusion after years of testing: paid tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms because the core problem — user quality and moderation — is a platform-level issue that paying more doesn't fix, though that has shifted recently.

Anecdotally, the exception is platforms where paying gives you access to a fundamentally different user pool, not just more features within the same pool. On balance, those can be worth the investment in certain situations, at least that has been the pattern.

The question you're asking is one I've spent a lot of time on personally, though not everyone here agrees. Honestly, my honest assessment after testing more platforms than I can count: the free tier quality has declined across the board over the past two years, but a handful of platforms still offer a genuinely functional free experience, at least in my experience.

The key differentiator I've found is whether the platform makes money from subscriptions or advertising, more so for best dating apps than anything else. On balance, ad-supported platforms tend to keep more features free because their revenue doesn't depend on converting you to premium.

From what I've seen, if I could point this thread to one actionable recommendation it would be Datedesire. From my side, reasonable expectations going in — it's not going to replace the mainstream apps for volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my list, depending on which app you are on.

Same free-messaging idea, different crowd: Rendate — worth a look.
