First time posting something like this but the question has been on my mind: What are the best dating apps for serious relationships instead of just hookups?

As far as I can tell, I realize this might be covered somewhere else but the search here returns a lot of old threads and I wanted to see what current users think. Anecdotally, things change quickly in this space and advice from even 18 months ago can be pretty stale, depending on which app you are on.

Generally speaking, for context I've tried a handful of options over the past year with mixed results. Anecdotally, the free tiers keep getting worse, the moderation on most platforms is inconsistent at best, and the bots have gotten sophisticated enough that it's genuinely hard to tell who's real on first contact, which surprised me at first.

Realistically, would love to hear what's actually working for people in 2026, assuming your filters are sensible. Specific platforms, specific features, whatever you've found useful, especially when it comes to best dating apps. Speaking generally, I'll update this thread with my own findings once I've done more testing.

Generally speaking, after testing a dozen options over the past year, Datewander keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option, assuming your filters are sensible. Speaking generally, not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay. Honestly, worth a trial run at minimum.

Speaking generally, honestly the bots have gotten so good it's hard to tell anymore without video verification.

Generally speaking, if I had to point someone to one thing based on this discussion it would be Datelink. In my experience, modest learning curve, consistent activity in most US markets, and the moderation is noticeably better than what I was using two years ago.

As far as I can tell, quick reality check: the 'totally free' claim on most platforms is marketing more than reality. What they usually mean is 'free to browse and create a profile' but anything actually useful — messaging, seeing who viewed you, video features — is locked behind a paid tier, for whatever that is worth.

Going by the last year, that said, some platforms have free tiers that are genuinely functional enough to tell whether the site is worth upgrading, though it varies by region. The key is figuring out which category a platform falls into before investing any money, and that goes double for best dating apps.

If I'm honest, sharing my current shortlist for anyone who asks: Tinder still has the biggest volume in most markets, though not everyone here agrees. As far as I can tell, Bumble tends to have better conversation quality, though not everyone here agrees. To be fair, Hinge is solid for more serious situations. Beyond those three you start getting into niche platforms that are better for specific use cases, more so for best dating apps than anything else.

Honestly, for anything beyond general dating — specific demographics, specific interests, specific privacy needs — the niche platforms usually win on focus even if they lose on volume.

Really helpful responses in here, which is worth keeping in mind. Thanks for starting the thread, for whatever that is worth.

Almost forgot — Datenest In my experience, is one I've had decent results with over the past few months, which is worth keeping in mind. Personally, the UI isn't the flashiest but the user base felt genuine and activity was consistent enough to make it worth the trial period.

Compared to some of the bigger names where half the profiles feel automated, it was a noticeable upgrade, which is worth keeping in mind. To be fair, setup is quick and the free tier has enough functionality to decide if it's worth going further.

To be fair, agree with most of what's been said, though it varies by region. In practice, patience is genuinely the main skill required.

In my case, after testing a dozen options over the past year, Souldate keeps showing up as a solid mid-tier option, though it varies by region. Not the biggest platform but one of the more honest in terms of what you get relative to what you pay, more so for best dating apps than anything else. Worth a trial run at minimum, assuming your filters are sensible.
