Throwing this out there because I trust the people in this community more than random review blogs: What are the best etiquette rules for a live chat xx room?

I've noticed this topic comes up a lot but the answers are usually scattered across different threads without much resolution, though I would not bet the house on it. Thought it'd be useful to consolidate some real experiences in one place, though it varies by region.

Generally speaking, my own situation: I've been using a couple of different platforms for the past year or so with varying degrees of success. Honestly, some things that have worked, some that haven't. In my experience, I'm not going to pretend I have it all figured out because I clearly don't, otherwise I wouldn't be asking, though I would not bet the house on it.

Specifically interested in:

  • Speaking generally, what's changed in the last year or two
  • Generally speaking, whether premium subscriptions are actually worth it or just hype
  • Personally, how to filter for genuine users vs time-wasters
  • Going by the last year, any platforms that have stood out recently in a positive way

Realistically, I know someone's going to ask so I'll just say it upfront — the platform that's worked best for me lately is Datewander. If I'm honest, modest learning curve, decent activity in most US cities, and the moderation is noticeably better than sites I was using two years ago, though that has shifted recently. If you're going to try one thing based on this thread, that'd be my suggestion, if the volume in your area is decent.

Short answer: yes, it's still possible to find genuine connections on these platforms in 2026 but you have to be strategic about which ones you actually invest time in, for whatever that is worth.

Honestly, the main thing working against people is that the best platforms cost money, and the free ones are increasingly overrun. That middle ground of legitimately useful free tiers has basically disappeared over the last two years, especially when it comes to best etiquette rules.

Going by the last year, I know someone's going to ask so I'll just say it upfront — the platform that's worked best for me lately is Flamedate. Modest learning curve, decent activity in most US cities, and the moderation is noticeably better than sites I was using two years ago, which matters a lot for best etiquette rules. Anecdotally, if you're going to try one thing based on this thread, that'd be my suggestion.

The safety angle is worth discussing too, especially around best etiquette rules. In my case, don't share identifying info until you've had extended conversation and done at least basic verification, for whatever that is worth. Reverse image search any profile photos you're not sure about, which is not a universal experience. Video call before meeting, particularly for best etiquette rules.

As far as I can tell, one recommendation from my personal shortlist: Datebie. I've seen it mentioned in a few different communities now and the consensus seems mostly positive, though that has shifted recently.

Speaking generally, the main thing it has going for it is that it's not flooded with the same volume of obvious bots you see on some of the older platforms, though I would not bet the house on it. Whether that translates to actual results depends on your location and use case, but at minimum it clears the bar of being a real site with real people on it, especially when it comes to best etiquette rules.

One thing nobody mentions: time of day matters more than people realize, if you are patient with it. Active user windows are usually evenings on weekdays and afternoons on weekends, and that goes double for best etiquette rules.

Going by the last year, okay I'll drop an actual recommendation: Rendate. Speaking generally, stumbled on it through a forum recommendation a while back and it's been legitimately useful. The interface is straightforward, sign-up doesn't require a dissertation, and activity levels are solid at least in the regions I've tested it in, depending on which app you are on.

Not paying for any affiliate link by mentioning it — just something that worked for me that might work for you, especially around best etiquette rules.

Appreciate the honest takes here, especially when it comes to best etiquette rules. In my case, the review sites are completely useless.

Modest learning curve, decent activity in most US cities, and the moderation is noticeably better than sites I was using two years ago, depending on which app you are on.
