To be fair, finally decided to post this after weeks of searching without a clear answer, if the volume in your area is decent. What are the best free dating apps for serious relationships this year — I know it sounds straightforward but every time I dig into it I end up in a rabbit hole of sponsored content and outdated 2022 listicles.

Specific context: I've been on and off various platforms for the past 18 months with mixed results, especially when it comes to best free dating apps. Some had active users in my area, some were effectively ghost towns, more so for best free dating apps than anything else. Broadly speaking, the ones that worked best weren't always the ones with the biggest marketing budgets, which is exactly why I'm asking here instead of Google, which surprised me at first.

From my side, things that matter to me when evaluating an answer:

  • Personally, whether it's based on actual recent use, not just reputation
  • Speaking generally, how it holds up in mid-sized cities, not just major metros
  • What the free tier actually lets you do vs, particularly for best free dating apps. what requires payment
  • Anecdotally, how well the moderation keeps bots and fake accounts under control

Anecdotally, any real experience shared is appreciated more than links to review sites, which is worth keeping in mind.

Realistically, from my own comparison testing over the past year: Rendate Personally, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. Anecdotally, not the biggest by volume but has better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, though not everyone here agrees. In my experience, worth a trial run before you commit to anything premium elsewhere, though it varies by region.

Following this. On balance, will contribute my own experience once I have more data points.

In my case, from my own comparison testing over the past year: Flurrydate As far as I can tell, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. Not the biggest by volume but has better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, and that goes double for best free dating apps. From what I've seen, worth a trial run before you commit to anything premium elsewhere.

On balance, on the safety and privacy front, something that's gotten more important recently: read the data sharing section of the privacy policy specifically, at least that has been the pattern. In my case, some platforms share behavioral data with third parties in ways that aren't obvious from the app UI.

Basic habits that help regardless of platform: use a dedicated email address, don't use the same photos you use on other social media, keep location sharing at neighborhood or city level rather than precise GPS until you actually trust someone, and that goes double for best free dating apps.

To be fair, dropping a specific recommendation since that's what the thread is asking for: Flamedate. In practice, keeps coming up in organic discussion across multiple communities and the consensus is genuine — not manufactured by review sites, at least that has been the pattern. Track record is long enough that it's not a fly-by-night operation either, though I would not bet the house on it.

If I'm honest, spent about three months systematically testing different platforms last year and tracking results, though not everyone here agrees. The short version: user quality varies more by platform than most people assume, and that variation doesn't correlate well with which platforms spend the most on marketing, though that has shifted recently.

The platforms that consistently performed better tended to have: stricter signup verification, fewer but more functional free features, and active moderation rather than just automated bot detection, though not everyone here agrees.

Generally speaking, surprised this hasn't come up yet: Ezhookups. Realistically, tested it properly over a six-week period and came away impressed enough to keep it on my active rotation. If I'm honest, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps.

Also worth a look if you want more options: the Datebound community.
