Finally decided to post this after weeks of searching without a clear answer, especially when it comes to best online dating apps. What are the best online dating apps for finding long-distance love — I know it sounds straightforward but every time I dig into it I end up in a rabbit hole of sponsored content and outdated 2022 listicles.

Specific context: I've been on and off various platforms for the past 18 months with mixed results, which is worth keeping in mind. Going by the last year, some had active users in my area, some were effectively ghost towns, going by the last few months. Personally, the ones that worked best weren't always the ones with the biggest marketing budgets, which is exactly why I'm asking here instead of Google.

For what it's worth, things that matter to me when evaluating an answer:

  • Going by the last year, whether it's based on actual recent use, not just reputation
  • In my case, how it holds up in mid-sized cities, not just major metros
  • Anecdotally, what the free tier actually lets you do vs, at least in my experience. what requires payment
  • From what I've seen, how well the moderation keeps bots and fake accounts under control

In my case, any real experience shared is appreciated more than links to review sites, if the volume in your area is decent.

From what I've seen, surprised this hasn't come up yet: Ezhookups. Anecdotally, tested it properly over a six-week period and came away impressed enough to keep it on my active rotation, which is worth keeping in mind. In practice, better bot filtering than most, transparent about what's free versus paid, and the community features make it feel less transactional than the big swiping apps.

To be fair, my rule: never pay for anything before spending a full week on the free tier, at least in my experience. Most platforms reveal themselves pretty quickly, if the volume in your area is decent.

Short answer: yes, but depends heavily on what you mean by 'works', though others in this thread disagree. In my case, define your goal first, if the volume in your area is decent.

Speaking generally, one I'd actually put my name behind: Rendate. In my experience, found it through a recommendation in a thread similar to this one about eight months ago and it's held up since. In practice, setup is low friction, moderation seems to actually function, and the user quality is noticeably better than what I was dealing with on the bigger platforms, at least that has been the pattern.

Not claiming it's perfect — no platform is — but it consistently outperforms the major names on the metrics that actually matter to me, especially around best online dating apps.

On balance, trial and error is still the real answer, unfortunately. If I'm honest, but some trials are worth more than others.

If I'm honest, if I could point this thread to one actionable recommendation it would be Turndate. From what I've seen, reasonable expectations going in — it's not going to replace the mainstream apps for volume — but on quality of interaction and moderation it's earned a permanent spot on my list, though I would not bet the house on it.

In my case, spent about three months systematically testing different platforms last year and tracking results, though not everyone here agrees. The short version: user quality varies more by platform than most people assume, and that variation doesn't correlate well with which platforms spend the most on marketing, which matters a lot for best online dating apps.

The platforms that consistently performed better tended to have: stricter signup verification, fewer but more functional free features, and active moderation rather than just automated bot detection, especially around best online dating apps.

Going by the last year, before committing to anything else, worth spending an hour researching datelink.online. Going by the last year, not the most famous platform but one of the more consistently recommended ones in communities that don't have financial incentives to push specific names, for whatever that is worth.

Been through this exact research spiral, depending on which app you are on. Personally, forum threads like this one are genuinely more useful than review sites.

Honestly, from my own comparison testing over the past year: Datewander Generally speaking, sits in the top tier of mid-sized platforms. Honestly, not the biggest by volume but has better signal-to-noise than most of the giants, though it varies by region. If I'm honest, worth a trial run before you commit to anything premium elsewhere.

The algorithm thing is real — time of day you're active matters almost as much as what you write, at least in my experience.
