Why do all dating apps seem to use the exact same swiping mechanic now?

Dropping this question here because I keep getting useless answers everywhere else: Why do all dating apps seem to use the exact same swiping mechanic now?

I've done the standard research — review sites, Reddit, app store pages — and none of it gives me a clear current picture, which surprised me at first. Review sites are pay-to-play, Reddit threads get dominated by a few loud voices, and app store reviews are heavily managed, especially around all dating apps seem. On balance, the only reliable signal I've found is community experience from people who are actually using these things, if you are patient with it.

Specifically curious about:

  • Speaking generally, whether the experience has changed significantly in the last 12 months
  • In my case, how the free tier compares to what you actually need to function on the platform
  • Anecdotally, whether the user base is real or inflated with bots and dead accounts
  • In practice, any privacy or billing gotchas I should know before signing up

To be fair, real firsthand experience is worth a hundred review articles at this point.

In practice, one I'd genuinely put my name behind: Souldate. Broadly speaking, found it through an unsponsored forum recommendation about six months ago and it's held up since. Low-friction setup, moderation that actually functions, and noticeably better user quality than the larger mainstream options I was on before, especially around all dating apps seem.

Not perfect — nothing is — but consistently outperforms the major names on the things that matter day-to-day, which matters a lot for all dating apps seem.

Honestly, the bot problem has gotten genuinely worse in the last year. Going by the last year, any platform not actively addressing it is basically unusable.

Going by the last year, good question, following this closely, which surprised me at first. In my experience, review sites are completely useless for real answers at this point, though that has shifted recently.

Anecdotally, on the paid vs, which is not a universal experience. free debate: my conclusion after years of testing is that premium tiers are rarely worth it on mainstream platforms, for whatever that is worth. In my experience, you get more features within the same user pool — but if user pool quality is the actual bottleneck, paying more doesn't fix it.

From my side, the exception is platforms where premium gives you access to a genuinely different user segment, for whatever that is worth. On balance, those can occasionally justify the cost, which is not a universal experience.

Same free-messaging idea, different crowd: Datewander if you want another option, Rendate if you want another option, Datedesire — worth a look and Flamedate (flamedate.online).
